Oh yeah, quoted from 1980, or was that 1890? Good God Almighty---------don't the Republicans have ANYTHING new to address our dire economic situation?????
Some of us are better off, some of us are less well off, but all-in-all the COUNTRY is better off. We are turning the Titanic just ahead of hitting the iceberg----------we all pray that the country survives and thrives once again------------don't we?
We got where we are thanks to the GOP-------we have begun a fledgling recovery-----------the GOP , I suppose would prefer an abortion to a full-term recovery-----just to get rid of the POTUS.
Spare me the indignation and PLEASE give us the Republican plan---------------PLEASE!
We may hit the iceberg yet-----if we do , neither the Republicans or Democrats did anything to stop it.
ReplyDeleteCarol, the Republicans have no plan, nor do the Democrats. And, should either party come up with a plan, the chances of it being implemented are close to zero due to the total gridlock in Washington. So, the Ship of State continues to drift along, without a tiller or anchor.
ReplyDeleteso are you? I'm not.
ReplyDeleteI suppose that it really does matter who you ask. The ones who are better off have benefited from the government policies that have promoted industries that they were connected with. The ones who have lost have been connected with industries that government has over-regulated to the point of running it out of the country. Government employees have benefited. Government services to the middle class have fallen off, but these services are still available to the poor. This has evened up the classes a little bit...maybe it isn't so great to work so hard to pay your own way when the government will do it for you if you can trade the stress for less income...
ReplyDeleteWashington DC has become the mafia don of the US. They really don't wan't to draw too much attention to themselves, but in reality they hold the key to your livelihoods. Why come up with a big plan to fix things when they can continue to scrape off a pretty good living for themselves out of the slime they surround themselves with?
Went from a 2 income family to a zero income family. If O is re-elected, I'll shutter the business and collect SS until the government can no longer continue to pay it.
ReplyDeleteIs that better off???
Don't think so.
Have we collected unemployment or government benefits? No and I don't intend to. Not everyone is a leech on society.
Carol,
ReplyDeleteWhy are you bent about looking for a plan from the Republicans? So you can dis it? You haven't been concerned about a plan for the last 4 years why now?
You haven't been concerned about Obammma spending your grand children's wealth or even your great grand children's wealth. What's the big deal?
What exactly is it that we really want out of a plan anyway? Do we really want a balanced budget over and above every other priority? Do we want to support all of our military industries, military employees, poor folks, old folks over and above the huge debt that this support creates? Do we really want a comprehensive energy policy that actually doesn't favor petroleum and coal? Getting support for any change in direction will take salesmanship and leadership. I am not certain that it will make an overall difference in the way the middle class on down actually live their lives anymore.
DeleteCarol is a hit and run type of poster. Drive by postings. THrows up an inflammatory topic and bails most of the time. Ever notice how Dem's rarely offer a retraction even when they are proven factually incorrect?
Delete"Carol is a hit and run type of poster. Drive by postings. "
DeleteHmm, wasn't there a right leaning poster who frequently started topics on MW and then never commented on them?
Gasp! I'm shocked!

The "We are turning the Titanic just ahead of hitting the iceberg ..." is another incongreious statement from our friend in Virgina.
ReplyDeleteEdmund Burkes' "Those who don't know history ..." is appropriate.
Historical news flash: The Titanic sank! (doomed before it left the dock).
We aren't better off. At best, about the same. This thing I keep hearing, especially from Obama supporters, about a plan from the republican party, has me wondering, just as Iouman said. exactly what is the republican supposed to present, and how detailed could it possibly be? The Obama campaign didn't exactly come up with anything that was a lot more specific than to take from those who earn more and give to those who earn less. Get out of Iraq and Afghanistan? Big deal. It was going to happen at some point, regardless. My view is oh-so-simple: we're drowning in debt ($16T at 10 to 11 am EST today, by my calculation), there are some 20+ million out of work. Continue on? Lil 'ol' me doesn't think so.
ReplyDeleteThe ridiculous thing about demanding these point by point plans is that they are meaningless. Government is not a business and the POTUS does not get to just dictate a plan to the houses of congress and then tell them they are fired if they don't make it happen.
ReplyDeleteI agree more with Stormcloud. You need to have a general vision and you need to have the salesmanship to steer BOTH the voters and the representatives to work on making it happen. Obviously, a majority of idiots exist who believe Obama's vision is socialism. You can't fix stupid, so I won't bother trying to convince people otherwise. As for Romney and many on the right, I believe the vision is that the entire country can thrive if only we take away every regulation, take away every social program (except the socialist programs that seniors demand)and create a flat tax.
Max,
DeleteI agree with your first parapgraph, and most of your second. I think you're reaching a bit with 'take away every regulation, take away every social program'. I hadn't heard about flat tax notions. And I'm skeptical about that concept anyway.
Jean
Max your comment shows the standard left/right party line.... the right thinks that democrats are pure socialists and the left think that they right wants to take away all regulations and both think that libertarians are all anarchists.... However you are close to right about my feelings about Obama. Only my fear of him goes much deeper than mere socialism..
DeleteThe one point in your statement that has a duel meaning is the part about the POTUS not dictating a plan to congress... the only part of that you got right is the fact that he can't fire them... but if they don't oblige.... he just circumvents congress altogether.... reference the many executive orders and like the one talked about in the subject just posted 'The law according to Obama.'
Congress, both left and right are making themselves irrelevant by not defended the presidents little game in its entirety...
TS, the system we have right now is where each house is attempting to circumvent the others. The Republicans control one house and one house only and they are using that control to do truly meaningless shit like vote against Obama care and make grandiose public theatrics with it. In the senate, the Republicans don't have the majority, but can use procedural rules to block anything they don't agree with while Reid turns around and then blocks all partisan bills from congress from ever coming to the floor. As for Obama, I hardly believe he has taken the liberties that Reagan and Bush Jr. have, but we aren't going to agree on that.
DeleteA congress that wants to do its job can stop a lot of POTUS excess. That said, when you, as the speaker of the house of congress, play a perpetual game of "Fuck You" with the POTUS or with the minority party, they are eventually going to tire of it and go around you. And let's be clear, both parties have done this to opposition party presidents. Still, sooner or later, you have to govern. When you play Fuck You instead of governing, you weaken the credibility of the body you belong to. Is Boehnor a strong leader? Is he accomplishing anything of value? If you like FU politics, I guess he's doing a bang up job. Yet, the approval of congress is about 10% and they've done nothing but offer truly partisan budget ideas that they know Senate Dems and Obama will go for. Oh, and I love how that snake oil salesman Ryan calls 16 Democratic votes a bipartisan effort.
What is happening in Washington is every man for himself.
whoops, that should read pass truly partisan bills the know Senate Dems and Obama WON"T go for.
DeleteBTW TS, I did comment more back on that other thread on race from the other day.
Ya nailed it again----------we need a general vision that people can understand and relate to.
