Say Good Bye to one of the Senate seats that the GOP was going to win.

Dem Senator Claire McCaskill was losing to Rep Todd Akin. Then Akin pulled a Biden with extremely poor choice of words. But unlike Biden, he doesn't have a sympathetic press. Akin Says He Has No Plans to Quit Missouri Senate Race Rep. Todd Akin says he has no plans to withdraw as Missouri’s Republican candidate for Senate after drawing national criticism for his comments on rape and pregnancy. In his first interview since telling St. Louis Fox affiliate KTVI that “legitimate rape” typically does not result in pregnancy, Akin appeared on Mike Huckabee’s syndicated radio show and apologized for the comments. “I’ve really made a couple of serious mistakes here that were just wrong, and I need to apologize for those,” Akin said. “Let me be clear: Rape is never legitimate. It’s an evil act that’s committed by violent predators. I used the wrong words in the wrong way. What I said was ill conceived, and it was wrong, and for that I apologize.” Republican Sens. Scott Brown of Massachusetts and Rob Johnson of Wisconsin have called on Akin to drop out of Missouri’s Senate race, and National Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman John Cornyn hinted at the same, issuing a prepared statement urging Akin to “carefully consider what is best for him, his family, the Republican Party, and the values that he cares about and has fought for throughout his career in public service.” Nevertheless, Akin said he has no plans to withdraw. “I don’t know that I’m the only person in public office who’s suffered from foot-in-mouth disease here, and this was a very, very serious error. On the other hand, there are so many good people in Missouri who nominated me, and they understood my heart,” Akin said.

  1. I heard about this on the way to work this morning. Talk about pulling a Biden! This is one of those 'on-steroids' things. Not the 'legitimate rape' wording. I guess he was referring to genuine rape cases, as opposed to false charges. No, the thing I found really stupid was the statement about women being raped having some kind of defense mechanism to prevent getting pregnant. Really? R-E-A-L-L-Y??? Nothing short of a gun to shoot the creep's you-know-what off is a good defense mechanism. You might guess I could not believe what I had heard, and, no, it didn't sit well. The guy does not deserve to be re-elected.

    1. I agree that what he said was really stupid, but had it been a liberal that said it, you can bet the liberals would still be supporting him. Liberals look beyond stupidity and concern themselves only with power. If they needed to win the Senate, they would still be supporting him.

  2. Actually that IS true. Most women due to the emotional stress immediately start their menstrual cycle or can go as long a a year without one. One of my close family member thought she was pregnant because she was late after being raped - no as her menstrual cycle stopped for 6 months. This is not at all uncommon as this is what he was eluding to.

The problem is that one cannot say such a thing because pro abortion advocates have built their cause around this issue and keep in mind that the original Roe Vs. Wade was a lie.

    1. I would also like to add to the commit above that in two of those cases there was extreme weight loss in otherwise young healthy girls. This also could add to lack of menstrual cycles but I cannot say how common that is. It was a factor in they young women that I knew at various degrees.

  3. How is it that the MSM crucifies the Repub. (he deserved it) and ignores the Dem (who equally deserves it)

    Jean,

The gun ideas works for me.

  4. Yes, you can't have an open and honest debate about abortion. And notice that he did not say you can't get pregnant from being raped. He said the body TRIES to reject impregnation which there is evidence for. But that doesn't matter. He wasn't politically correct at all and he should have KNOWN the hysterics it would have caused. Very poor judgement on his part. He will lose now. Republicans are held to a higher standard than Democrats.

    1. That is just it, not everyone is politically correct and sometimes facts should be brought out. Any woman who has been rapped or has close ties with a victim will tell you that they go through hell.

  5. Akin was not my first choice to replace McCaskill as a resident of Missouri, John Brunner is much more conservative, but he lost the primary. The reason Brunner lost is because he has never been in politics, and the liberal slime machine run by Claire's minions labeled him an "extremist" because he had the highest chance of winning the Senate battle. Missouri is still a likely "red" state so even if Akin drops out, whoever gets nominated could still prove to be an upset. The neighbors and friends that I talk too are still pizzed that McCaskill has placed he nose so high up Obama's ass that she cannot be trusted. I could care less if Akin drops out or not, I will still be voting for anyone running against Queen McCaskill.

  6. Yeah, I didn't like him either. But I dislike having an Democrat controlled Senate even more.

  7. Rumor is he is withdrawing. Too little too late? I listened to what he said, dumb but probably blown out of proportion. No one likes abortion, no woman makes that decision without heartache and regret. But I'm not going to take that decision away from them. Would I urge one to consider all alternatives? of course.

    1. If I am reading your statement correctly here Live, this is where I believe a majority of Americans are on the issue. Nobody "Likes" abortion, though I will concede that I believe the left at times portrays this in a view of empowerment that I don't agree with. I would also urge someone to consider an alternative.

What I don't really get is why this guy is getting crucified for it. Look at Angie's and Kat's posts up above basically supporting what he said. Ryan is probably not very far away from Akin in his views on the matter. The Republican party wants the votes of people who think like Akin does, even though they really dont' support their agenda. While Akin's thinking resonates out in the weeds, the candidates at the top of the ticket continue to openly voice that they don't oppose abortion in cases of rape or incest. There's a disconnect there.

    2. Max, If he was a Democrat this would have never made the National media. But that's the life of a Republican. He had a 9 point polling advantage. Why the heck did he even put himself in that position to begin with?

    3. Max,
I really don't think this is about abortion and also where conservatives and liberals disagree. This is about his rape comments trying to put it back on some voodoo medical statement. Rape is rape, period and the conservatives won't have have it in their party, but if this guy had a "D" behind his name he would be given a pass by his own party as well as the MSM.

    4. So Biden's little "put them back in chains" gaffe was ignored? Your are both wrong about this. The media will latch onto anything they think they can sell. This is election season and anything and everything will be whipped into a frenzy.

On the level of rejecting this clown for his voodoo medical statement, I give you guys credit. However, to whine about the media is Akin (see what I did there) to killing the messenger. His views are not a way out distant point on the continuum of Republican thought. Most people would agree gotta that rape is rape period. However, because the MSM lacks the spine to really make candidates from either party describe what they believe, they allow voodoo views like Akin's to fester below the surface.

Where Democrats and Republicans should both be in agreement is in contempt of the media for not doing it's job. I'll give you guys the benefit of the doubt that you really want this clod trounced because he is an idiot. However, if you are pissed that he is being trounced because this story went national, then you are essentially saying you don't want the media to do it's job and rid all of us of clods that believe in junk science and believe that rape should be preposterously defined between legitimate and illegitimate.

Sadly, I have to admit, this was not a matter of the media doing the job it should be doing. This was a glorious pile of neon shit that was gift wrapped and Akin's defiance has only made the story that much more juicy.

    5. Actually Max, the most recent Biden gaffe about slavery, via "back in chains" comment was vastly overlooked by the democrats. How many democrats asked for Biden to step down or further evened played the gaffe for what it was? Many top GOP'ers and conservative talking heads asked Akin to step aside including Glenn Beck and Sean Hannity.

    6. yeah,it was directed at ya'll (meaning blacks) and the blacks ignored it (except for one person) the abortion remark was aimed at women. It wasn't ignored. It was hyped... all over the world for that matter.

    7. If it's the MSM that's bringing Akin down, why are so many conservatives jumping on him to quit the race? With Biden, I think many liberals who consider themselves true Democrats DO view the Republican party and their policies as racist and the voter stuff in Ohio and Virginia aren't helping. While some may cringe at his mangling of a metaphor, I don't particularly think Democrats have a problem calling Republican policies oppressive. Was Biden misspeaking or catering to his audience? That's a good question.

But it's not the same as what Akin did. Akin's only slip up was he told the truth of how he really feels and by so doing, opened the door on a line of thinking that is in the mainstream of Republican thought. I don't fault Republicans for their philosophical opposition to abortion. That opposition, however, has blown into a full on movement to use whatever means necessary to negate Roe v Wade. You said gotta this really isn't about abortion, and at first I kinda of agreed. However, it's entirely about abortion.

Akin's junk science view is just one little piece of a bigger view on abortion. It's something right out of 1984 where the goal is to redefine concepts in the most tortuous way to create even more tortuous laws and ultimately make abortion illegal despite the precedent set by Roe v Wade. The Republican party as a whole supports Akin's end goal though not all of them may support his absurd junk science. Akin didn't missspeak, he told the truth and THAT is why conservatives want him gone.

  8. According to State election law, if he wants to drop out, he has to do it by 5 p.m. cst today so the GOP can pick a replacement. If he waits until after today to drop out, it has to go through the courts which could potentially be a charlie foxtrot.

    1. The guy is an ahole. Instead of dropping out, he makes a commercial and "apologizes". That means he is not dropping out. He is feeling jilted and vindictive and is in denial. He had a 9 point lead until he opened his big mouth. He probably can't conceive of losing even after this screw up. No one will work with him. He's toast. Idiot doesn't deserve to be in Congress if he can't recognize that. He probably thought I goody I'm going to be a powerful Senator and then SPLAT! He isn't taking responsibility for being a complete bonehead. http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2012/08/21/rep-akin-appeals-for-forgiveness-in-new-ad-as-pressure-over-rape-comment-builds/

  9. Akin 44 McCaskill 43

Akin has certainly been damaged by this whole thing- a Survey USA poll last week showed him up by 11 points in the wake of his primary victory. But he's by no means out of it- it looks like Missouri's increasing Republican lean over the last few years would give him a decent chance at victory in spite of this major controversy.

    --------------

So he has a one point lead. But NOW the DNC will flood the state with campaign money. McKaskill was written off. No more. How will he poll after the negative ad campaign that's coming? Republicans may just abstain from voting for him.

    1. Not so sure about that live. We may see another high turnout like we did back in 2008. I have had a wait at an election site until 2008 and I waited with my daughter for two hours to vote. If I have to wait that long again this November to boot Obama, there is no way I wouldn't vote to oust McCaskill.

    2. I hope it fades away, but I think there will be ads right up to the election about "legitimate rapes". Just like we will see "You did not build that/Yes I built that" ads right up until election day.

    2. It is disgusting, but being gay is not a crime in the Democratic party like it is in the Republican party. Whether it's trolling for sex on Craig's list or sleeping with prostitutes like Vitter and Spitzer did, no strings attached sex is a sign of weak character.

Democrats locally there denounced him. What more do you want? When it is a congressmen or senator, I think the rest of the nation does have a bigger stake in that they set laws the rest of us abide by. When it is a local legislator, I'm inclined to let it be a local matter and let local voters decide for themselves what kind of people they want to represent them
