The EU gets the Nobel Peace Prize - Say What?

Can this commission get anymore irrelevant. They've turned the Peace Prize in to a joke. First Obama, now the EU? Really? What has the EU done to promote Peace?

  1. The $1M cash prize will be awarded to Spain or Greece or Italy ... ohh, who knows, to bolster their cash reserves. :)

  2. This from Reuters: The award served as a reminder that the EU had largely brought peace to a continent which tore itself apart in two world wars in which tens of millions died.

The EU has transformed most of Europe "from a continent of wars to a continent of peace," Nobel Committee Chairman Thorbjoern Jagland said in announcing the award in Oslo.

"The EU is currently undergoing grave economic difficulties and considerable social unrest," Jagland said. "The Norwegian Nobel Committee wishes to focus on what it sees as the EU's most important result: the successful struggle for peace and reconciliation and for democracy and human rights."

Jagland praised the EU for rebuilding Europe from the devastation of World War Two and for its role in spreading stability after the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989

My opinion: Germany hasn't attacked anyone in 70 years, a new record.

  3. The Marshall Plan, military presence by four major powers for the majority of the time since the end of WW11 and the presence of the US as a major funder and horsepower of NATO had absolutely nothing to do with it....

    1. The Scott and Max.
Good points but better if put in context.
From May8,1945 the Western Powers were intent in containing the spread of Communism throughout Europe and in blunting the Russian spread of what they saw as a threat to their own power.
Germany was the vehicle for the resistance of the West and the great powers led by American money and armament were there boots and all. The Marshall Plan, the Berlin Air lift and the British French and American zones of influence set up after the war were not so much reconstruction efforts but a statement to Russian Joe that he could go so far and no further. It is easy to extrapolate similar reasons for Korea and Vietnam and many other skirmishes.
I find it interesting that following the demise of Communism, apart from China, American interest and attempted domination shifted to the Middle East.

      Cheers from Aussie

  4. Bwahahahaha The EU rebuilt Europe after WWII? Peace Prize commission praised 70 years of rebuilding? LMAO

The Maastricht Treaty—whose main architects were Helmut Kohl and François Mitterrand—established the European Union in 1993.

By my count the EU has existed for 19 years.Established 4 years after the fall of the Berline wall. 51 years after WWII

Socialists = revisionists always has, always will. Just like the brain washing camps in North Korea, Siberia you name it. Because is their minds, the ends justifies the means. Repeat a lie often enough and the dumb masses of the world will believe it.

  5. Maybe this group can win next year. The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). Below is their principles.

I think it qualifies, especially number 3 and 4:

    1) Mutual respect for the independence, sovereignty, equality, territorial integrity, and national identity of all nations.

    2) The right of every State to lead its national existence free from external interference, subversion or coercion.

    3) Non-interference in the internal affairs of one another.

    4) Settlement of differences or disputes by peaceful manner.
