Residents In More Than 30 States File Secession Petitions
Here's a list of states where residents have filed secession petitions in recent days: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, Nevada, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, West Virginia and Wyoming.
Micah H. (no last name provided) of Arlington, Texas filed a petition that had nearly 60,000 signatures as of Tuesday morning. It reads:
The US continues to suffer economic difficulties stemming from the federal government's neglect to reform domestic and foreign spending. The citizens of the US suffer from blatant abuses of their rights such as the NDAA, the TSA, etc. Given that the state of Texas maintains a balanced budget and is the 15th largest economy in the world, it is practically feasible for Texas to withdraw from the union, and to do so would protect it's citizens' standard of living and re-secure their rights and liberties in accordance with the original ideas and beliefs of our founding fathers which are no longer being reflected by the federal government.
"Any people anywhere, being inclined and having the power, have the right to rise up, and shake off the existing government, and form a new one that suits them better. This is a most valuable,-- most sacred right--a right, which we hope and believe, is to liberate the world. Nor is this right confined to cases in which the whole people of an existing government, may choose to exercise it. Somewhere in the distant past I recall reading history concerning the make up of the Union of the United States. Within this history I seem to remember that Texas joined the Union having first obtained a concession from the other states that she could secede at a later date.

It's embarrassing Kingston that this is what our nation has become. On the one hand, the gift of freedom that was paid for by the sacrifice of all our ancestors has created a land wherein there is no fear whatsoever to speak what is on your mind. On the other hand, this freedom is now taken for granted and as you can see from the tantrums of people like TD and this woman (something in the water in Arizona perhaps), we have come to believe that freedom to speak your mind means that you are obligated to scream in outrage when you don't get your way. Children around the age of 2 exhibit this behavior in spades. Sadly, we can discipline a child or send them to their room to scream and tantrum until they take a nap, but for adults here who act this way, we can only sigh and try to tolerate them until they die of old age.

(Or does 'we' refer to Hillary Clinton's village?) One of the core problems, as I've been told - children and their upbringing. One of the significant culture shifts I've read about, stemming from, oddly enough, the Flower Children (I use 'Flower Kids') generation to which your screen name alludes, yes? Was that not an era od teens and young adults who considered themselves more enlightened, promoted a much more permissive behavior (free love, tune in, turn on, drop out, stuff like that), and distrusted people over 30? Do you think any of that, from so long ago (1960s and -70s) have any effect on our life styles today, Max? Thankfully, I guess, my parents weren't so quick to give it up and split, or to have children without first agreeing to and sticking with the notion that 'till death do we part' was a sworn commitment. Those flower kids are now old, old people for the most part, with children who are now in their 50s and 60s. That's a generation or two that have grown up in the age of irresponsibility (a take on your generation's Age of Aquarius song - the FK did have some good ones). If I misread your age bracket, I apologize.

DeleteMy thanks, Went to sleep in the easy chair this evening. Had been on the old tractor cutting grass in the 5 acre during the afternoon. The old tractor is an International B250 manufactured in 1949 or thereabouts when I was 14 years old. We are both old and rusted out, we both cough when we have to start anything and the paintwork is no longer attractive in both items!
I too am sure the foolishness will pass but I worry about what will follow it? There is a lot of potential for the Petreus thing to blow up a storm. Just what your country does not want at the present time.

My screen name has nothing to do with flower child values and everything to do with the fact that Max Yasgur was a self proclaimed Republican who did more then just pay lip service to the principle of free speech, he defended it. I have been frequently critical of the baby boomer demographic. You are correct, we have had several generations now who have grown up in a very entitled way and who have little idea what kinds of sacrifices were made for their lives to be so easy. The concept of shared sacrifice is completely gone these days. The causes of that run a lot deeper then hippies having sex in the mud at Yasgur's farm.
If you'll notice Jean, I was not the only one to chide TD for his tone. It's one thing to disagree, it's another to spit venom and demand that things be fixed while proclaiming at the same time that Obama can just F off. That is the attitude of many, IE if my guy doesn't win, I'll just stand here with my feet planted and my arms crossed and object to everything that isn't EXACTLY the way I want it. Undoubtedly, you can find the left leaning version of this, no?
Here is something to consider Jean and refer back to. When I make a criticism of a particular post or a particular segment of the political spectrum that is far right, I am NOT, by default, defending a polar opposite position. Read that again, it is an important distinction. By criticizing the far right, I am not defending the far left. By criticizing McConnell's obstruction tactics, I am not defending Harry Reid's obstruction (he's my senator and I don't like him at all). By criticizing the uber tight assed adults of today who were young people in the 60's, I am not defending the flower children. Lastly, by being critical of the excesses of Capitalism that punish everyone but the most able and most conniving, I am not by default suggesting we should embrace Marxism, Socialism or Communism or look to the government to solve all of our problems.
When Bush was reelected, I was not happy. However, I did not wake up bitter every day and stomp around blogs like this and spam them with endless links to far left articles claiming the end of humanity was nigh. William, TD and Livestrongest are spammers, who choose to post the words of others and tack on some taunt at the end that is equivalent of giving someone the bird. My posts, regardless of who agrees with them, are my own words. It's one thing to post a link as supporting data, it's another thing entirely to just post spam and not bother to put the work into making your case. Actually, it's laziness, kinda like a welfare queen taking a handout. FWIW, I've never taken a government handout, I've never (thankfully) been unemployed if I wasn't in school and I served in the military when I was younger. If this makes me a communist or something, which many have labeled me, perhaps not you, then so be it. I feel like I've done my part to help keep the country going and I call things as I see them.
No, actually, you've been pretty clear of being disdainful of government, and if you wish a qualifier, of irresponsible government. General leanings seem to me to be to the left, but that is not important to me, as long as there is some basis for any such lenaings.

Appreciate the thanks,I probably shouldn't have mentioned it, at least not in the context I did. You have correctly identified my views, I am disdainful of irresponsible government. By 1980's standards, I do not consider myself a liberal, but by today's standards, I get called a communist by spamming bomb throwers like William. I believe it is in everyone's best interest to create a society wherein there is a basic standard of living FOR THOSE WHO WANT TO WORK. A central belief that has arisen today is that if you vote Democrat, it is because you want stuff. This was expressed by Romney and his 47% comment and on election night by people like Bill O'Riley.
DeleteWe are rapidly becoming a nation of aristocracy and serfdom. In the long, long term, if we survive and rebound, it will be because we start to again punish an overconcentration of wealth into a tiny group of hands. It will also be because we again learn to respect education and because we again pay workers a fair wage relative to what they produce and the profit that is generated. Right now, we are at an absurd extreme on what we believe is fair and the country is near economic collapse. The best times for this country did not come when taxes were lowest and we were buying all our shit from somewhere else.
Mr. Lincoln was quite eloquent regarding Texas throughing off the yoke of Mexico but whistled a different tune when the southern states decided to through off the yoke of the U.S.A., launching the bloodiest war in our history to punish those who were seeking to through off the repressive government under which they suffered.
ReplyDeleteSome very untidy truths about the civil war center around the same sorts of things we are seeing today. Regardless of the moral feelings of the North regarding slavery, there certainly was a resentment over the fiscal advantage that slavery presented to the South. While the south could sell its cotton cheap to Europe, the North could not compete with similar but cheaper goods returning from Europe to the South. So the North started to punish the South with tarrifs. Once again, a lot of people died for the sake of rich capital owners.

ReplyDeleteThe total number on two Pennsylvania petitions rose by Wednesday afternoon to 17,884, while another 12,330 signed a single New Jersey petition and 6,591 others signed one for Delaware.
Petitions in at least seven states have collected in excess of 25,000 signatures, requiring the Obama Administration to formally respond by reviewing the requests.
By 2 p.m. Wednesday, Texas had more than 99,000 signatures, the most of any state.

That didn't seem like a big deal to me, but I could understand it being viewed as a milestone, especially to members of that portion of the human race. It didn't and doesn't matter to me. DeleteHere, William, I have to agree rather strongly, these things are connected. A major theme in this country is that the happiness of the individual supercedes any commitment that might be seen as somehow limiting. I'm not any happier about the food stamp issue then you are, but pretending the causes of the need for food stamps will just go away if we defund it is magical thinking at best. It's a vicious circle. We take little responsibility as individuals, and we elect irresponsible people who promise us freebies (allegedly as Democrats do) or people who promise us tax breaks (as Republicans allegedly do). To complete the loop, we see no commitment of our leaders to take responsibility, and it feeds on itself.

ReplyDeleteIt’s time to re-assert the narrative on secession and put it in its proper context, which is not an infantile reaction to the fact that Barack Obama won the election, but an expression of extreme uneasiness at the direction in which the country is heading, a widespread discontent that has been ongoing for long before Obama even took office, and a new commitment calling on states to nullify unconstitutional laws and regulations.
