Fears that Barack Obama would use a lame duck second term to eviscerate gun rights are fueling record firearms sales once again, with gun store owners labeling Obama, “the best gun salesmen we’ve had.”
Despite a new law allowing carrying without a permit, concealed-firearm permits in the fiercely independent state of Wyoming in the last quarter have smashed records set in previous years.
“People are definitely scared of a president who has voted when he was a senator against guns,” Anthony Bouchard, director of the Wyoming Gun Owners Association in Cheyenne told the Wyoming Star Tribune. “[If Obama gets re-elected] he’s in a lame-duck session and he can do the things he wants to do. That’s what we’re afraid of.”
Irvin Walker, owner of Triggers Gun Shop in Mills, called Obama, “the best gun salesmen we’ve had,” and said he was expecting another wave of customers after November 6 if Obama defeats Mitt Romney, despite the fact that sales are already riding high.
Gun and ammunition prices are expected to soar should Obama secure a second term, with rifles predicted to double in cost just as they did in the aftermath of Obama’s 2008 victory.
Greetings from Aussie.
ReplyDeleteThis post may perhaps be a little off topic but it is an opportunity to explain from the other side of the world how we in Australia see the campaign and the election.
For about a year, although it does feel longer, we had the primary campaign with an assortment of candidates wooing the Republican vote. Many were credible and some, notably Mr Gringrich were less so. The Republican voters chose Mitt Romney and will live to applaud their collective wisdom or bemoan their short sightedness.
The President, for all his problems over the past two years with a recalcitrant congress ;remains as a viable alternative to the republican steamroller which is receiving massive backing from the big end of town, notably the hedge funds who were initially partly responsible for the major financial crash which brought your great nation to its knees.
We have seen the campaign by both sides degenerate into political mud slinging with ads based not on facts but on impressions carefully planted in the minds of the electors by the hatchet men of the parties. The spectacle has been less than pleasant to witness even here in Australia where we see but one percent of the material which is force fed to you over the airways, the telephone and the mail boxes
On the credit side of the ledger we saw three debates and two speeches which will live on in the minds of Australians long after the college decides who will govern you for the next four years. The first debate gave the Democrats a case of the galloping convolutions as the Pres floundered around and the challenger steam rolled him. The second and third debates were much more closely contested and here at least we thought the Pres probably just shaded Mr Romney. I mentioned the two speeches, in my humble opinion the speech by the first lady was the outstanding event of the campaign and that by Mrs Romney was if not quite as brilliant, almost as good.
On the debit side we saw Mr Romney and his 40 something percent gaffe, this still resonates here as a remark by a man insulated by his wealth who can never understand the needs and aspirations of the less well off. The two candidates who made remarks concerning abortions which were offensive to just about all of the electors must accept responsibility for their actions. The President too is not blameless; we see the problems here as being little changed since the Democrats won the white house for years ago. Fiscal debit remains your biggest challenge and the recovery which shows signs of becoming a reality is painfully slow.
What then of you the people?, it is your votes,or worse, your indifference if you do not vote which will decide the future. On the MW site which preceeded this forum we had many who were vociferous in their condemnation of whom they perceived as their opponents but their posts were seldom supported by solid facts. I worry if such self opinionated voters are capable of making the informed decision necessary prior to casting a vote.
Here our small group are at least prepared to discuss the issues politely and I have no doubt when you cast your ballot there will be a reasoned thought process behind the decision you make.
What do I think? Well I think you have all been most kind in allowing me to partake in your debates, some have taken the trouble to contact me privately to explain points which had escaped my attention. To all of you, friends and critics alike I thank you. My major interest is in your history but to neglect contemporary politics is a sure way to misread history. On Tuesday due to time differences, I shall be able to watch live coverage of the results.I think it will be close and I fancy the President will be returned but with a very small majority. I do hope the college and the lawyers do not try to overthwow the popular vote but I will not be surprised if something sinister happens. I well remember the Jeb Bush Supreme court fiasco a decade ago.
Cheers from Aussie
Mr Romney and his 40 something percent gaffe
DeleteAnd from that comment, you can tell he is not a politician. A realist? When you review the last 2 years the current administration has gone out of their way to buy the electorate.
1. 47 million of food assistance. 2x as many from 2008.
2. 10 million on disability. 2x as many from 2008.
3. Free birth control pills.
4. Amnesty for up to 2 million illegals in the country.
5. His proposal to “give every responsible homeowner in America a chance to save about $3,000 a year on their mortgage by refinancing at historically low rates.
47% of tax eligible Americans pay no Federal Income Tax.
6. Students loans now controlled by the government, held to near zero percent interest.
7. GM bailout which preserved the unions stake in the company.
The other side.
1. Tax the rich.
2. End oil subsidies.
3. Demonize the Tea Party.
4. Demonize Big Pharma.
5. Demonize Doctors.
6. Demonize insurance companies.
7. Corporate jet owners.
8. Romney hates women.
9. Hates the coal industry.
10. Demonize the pipeline.
The list goes on.
This is our president. Not the president of all people but a president seeking to divide and reward groups and buy votes.
The recovery that wasn't? From our 23 million looking for work, the government boasts of 7.9% unemployment rate, if it were truly an accurate number we would be in a recovery mode. However the 23 million is a problem.
Last month 171K jobs created, heralded as a triumph. To bad it was off set with 170K people losing their jobs. This is the recovery Obama has brought us.
As far as the election we shall see. Will it be honest? All ready their are claims of voting machine issues, voter fraud. This may not end well.
"This is our president. Not the president of all people but a president seeking to divide and reward groups and buy votes. "
DeleteThe cynicism of this statement is fascinating. I'm sorry Lou, but that's a long list of talking points. It is not directly George Bush's fault that Obama was left with a massive recession, and it's not directly Obama's fault that the economy has not created millions of jobs. Obama has not moved taxes. He hasn't taxed the rich. He hasn't taxed corporations. Corporations are sitting on literally trillions in cash and they won't invest here for one reason and one reason only. Greed. They don't have to pay workers shit in China or Vietnam. On trade, Obama has filed a lot of complaints against China. This is weak IMO, but the Republicans are no more willing to tear up those bad trade deals then Democrats are.
We could go point for point and make a mirror of list how Republicans are just owned by special interest. Why it's more noble to defend to the death our current tax structure then it is to give people some food stamps is beyond me, but your post basically makes that case. You've moved from moderate to simply Republican and they care no more about you then you believe Obama does. The Democrats no longer care about what I believe is important and I don't kid myself that by voting for them I am somehow voting against what the far right in this country wants.
The point Max is neither is flawless in this charade called an election. 4.2 billion spent to take a job paying 400K a year and guaranteed to piss off half the country. Where does that make sense in anyone's mind. That says it all, the people that take the job are flawed in ego or so far buried in their ideals that they take the job.
DeleteThere are those that truly need food stamps, energy assistance and help in general. The problem with a system like ours is there is no way to determine the needy from the lazy.
This vote is for more of the same or possible a change. will the change be good or bad. No way to tell until it happens. Most likely in 4 years we will be voting for Change again no matter who is president. I suspect Romney isn't the person to repair the problems however Obama has proven he doesn't want to repair the problems.
The point you made is correct, it isn't entirely Bush's fault, a refreshing thought after hearing so much bashing or Obama's fault. No one looks to the clowns making the laws, just attribute it to the guy at the top.
The madness of spending can be slowed, we can balance the budget and begin paying the debt but we lack the political will. Most of the new debt is being financed by the Federal reserve who can in a magic sweep of the eraser erase the debt. The Government can magically erase the Medicare, Social Security Bonds and problem solved. Debt is once again manageable. Unfortunately our politicians will have learned nothing and will do it again as it's in their own self interest.
p.s. Obama as much as he would like can tax no one. It's a power reserved for congress. Wonder if he can change that with an executive order.
LOL
I am tired of the government trying to be the answer as they have no answers only generalizations.
Gotta! Dude, is that you in the photo? I didn't picture you as being so cool, the earring says it all man, and the little goatee too.
ReplyDeleteWho are you? Did you move over from MW? And btw, no that is not me in the picture, but I do own firearms that are nearly identical.
DeleteMick's "TheProfessor" from MW, gotta.
DeleteGosh golly, I'm shocked! Shocked I tell ya's that anyone would consider a weapons purchase. It isn't like we read on a daily basis any concern with errant idiots posting of riots should their Messiah be evicted. And of course I've not seen or heard of any other cause for concern over the previous 3+ years regarding personal safety and privacy or thinly veiled state nationalization, or ...
ReplyDelete"After we win this election, it's our turn. Payback time. Everyone not with us is against us and they better be ready because we don't forget. The ones who helped us will be rewarded, the ones who opposed us will get what they deserve. There is going to be hell to pay. Congress won't be a problem for us
ReplyDeletethis time. No election to worry about after this is over and we have two judges ready to go."
