"The Senate Foreign Relations Committee said it won't hear from Clinton as planned at a Thursday hearing into the attack at the outpost in Benghazi that killed four Americans, including the U.S. ambassador. The House Foreign Affairs Committee also said Clinton would no longer give scheduled testimony at its hearing Thursday on Libya."

"William Burns and Thomas Nides, both Deputy Secretaries of State, will testify before that committee instead."
"Although I respect Bill
and Tom, we still don't have information from the Obama administration
on what went so tragically wrong in Benghazi," Ros-Lehtinen said. "We
have been combing classified and unclassified documents and have tough
questions about State Department threat assessments and decision-making
on Benghazi. This requires a public appearance by the Secretary of State
herself."

In response to the panel’s findings, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said in a letter to Congress that she was accepting all 29 of the panel’s recommendations, five of which are classified. “To fully honor those we lost, we must better protect those still serving to advance our nation’s vital interests and values overseas,” Mrs. Clinton said in the letter. Mrs. Clinton is already taking specific steps to correct the problems, according to officials.
ReplyDeleteThey say the State Department is asking permission from Congress to transfer $1.3 billion from contingency funds that had been allocated for spending in Iraq. This includes $553 million for hundreds of additional Marine security guards; $130 million for diplomatic security personnel; and $691 million for improving security at installations abroad.
Finally, the report blamed two major State Department bureaus — Diplomatic Security and Near Eastern Affairs — for failing to coordinate and plan adequate security. The panel also determined that a number of officials had shown poor leadership.
ReplyDelete“Systemic failures and leadership and management deficiencies at senior levels within two bureaus,” the report said, resulted in security “that was inadequate for Benghazi and grossly inadequate to deal with the attack that took place.”
Mrs. Clinton, we need to hear from you.
ReplyDeleteOh, the election's over.

Gee, and we don't want to besmirch the democratic hope for 2016, yes? Afterall, she did say she takes 'full' (or 'the fool's'?) responsibility, whatever that is.

ReplyDelete"Isn’t it funny that when a mainstream news article introduces a bit of truth into the issue, it automatically comes off as “right-wing”? Only now, after the political stakes have lowered, is the AP interested in building up its truth capital; which it will predictably burn running smokescreen for the Democrat Party again, whenever the heat is on."
No, I don't think it's funny.
DeleteOnly a complete dumb ass would believe that there wasn't a big screw up in Benghazi. The reality is that this shit happens a lot. Why THIS particular incident has become a hill Republicans wish to fight to the death on continues to baffle me. 4 Americans were killed in this case and they want someone's head on a pike. Exponentially more died on 9/11 and we chose to hold no one accountable. I don't get that.
ReplyDeleteThere was the issue of security lapses and failure to act on warnings, which I think is moderately defensible on the part of the administration, as in, there is a small degree of second-guessing, yes?
DeleteBut then, there is the issue of avoiding embarrassment a week after the DNC and the Obama is dead, AQ is on the run crowing. The effort to generate a fog so that it wouldn't adversely affect the then upcoming election, by claiming it was because of that video, DAYS after the evidence shows the administration KNEW OTHERWISE, seems to get little press, don't you think?
And, of course, the trot to LV. I could see an event like soldiers being killed or wounded in Afghanistan not being a disruption to the daily activities of the WH, but this murder of four in Benghazi was not a warzone event. It was an attack on U. S. soil, and four lives were lost. But gee, let's go smooze and pick up a few more pieces of silver to add to the pile of gold.
Do you get that, Max?

Jean, the questions remain. Why was there no security at the Embassy from day 1 in one of the most dangerous places in the world?
DeleteWhy didn't anyone respond to the attack?
Why didn't anyone call the Brits as they had forces nearby?
Much like fast and furious, the questions will never be answered, swept under the rug.
If this were a Republican in the oval office would the media have given the administration a pass, white washed both events? Would the media have given a republican a pass on the FEMA response to Sandy? Where is the outrage of Katrina???
If her injuries were that bad she should resign not - effective immediately. This just shows just how much contempt they have for the American people - they believe the public is stupid enough to believe this.
ReplyDeleteA commission that the State Department sets up to investigate the State Department.
DeleteNaturally we get the usual result.
This will turn into a request for more money. See above.
Angie,
DeleteThe public at large, voting, anyway, has proven to have the capacity for a significant amount of stupidity, no?
Jean
To a degree Jean yet I do believe that the results of this last election were more manipulated than they had been in the past..... at least I hope so for this country's future -- how scary it that....
DeleteMy American friends, may I poke my nose into this debate and make a point or so?
ReplyDeleteI am wondering out loud if there are not some double standards at play. As Max points out there has been lots of table thumping because four Americans got killed. Heads have rolled, HRC has fallen over and cannot testify on the Hill, There is a major report for the political commentators and Jean, Angie Louman and of course William to pontificate and speculate about.
Now I know the affair was a shambles but with the American flag flying in far flung places throughout the world, there is bound to be flair ups and casualties. As most would realize, America is no longer the flavor of the month in many quarters and this must be the price paid for taking on the role of global policeman. A role by the way I think you must soon relinquish as you do need to clean house at home.
Where I find most difficulty is in understanding the level of political opprobrium leveled at the administration over the death of four when there is apparently so little leveled at the NRA, the flawed constitution and the (so far) lack of meaningful action towards fixing your gun laws. Remember the faces of those little children. Were they not more deserving of consideration than those adults who died bravely doing their duty? There will be hearings and reports and political mud slinging on both sides as the Repubs continue to sulk having lost the un losable election and the Dems sit in an empty stable watching the horse gallop down the road as they try to get the door closed.
There will also be hand wringing and platitudes aplenty as government and citizens alike decry the violence. At the same time other citizens will be going into hock (just like your country) as they buy the latest biggest and noisiest bazooka to proclaim their rights. Many I have noticed even buy guns to use “agin the gobnent” when they consider the government has become a tyrant in the land.
The above are thoughts by a friend of your country with no political axe to grind and they are perhaps colored a little by the news this week that my best friend, an American living a mile away here in Tasmania, has but three or four weeks to live. It saddens me to know that he too is in despair at the way his country is going.
Cheers from Aussie
K,
DeleteThe questions remain:
Why was there no security at the Embassy from day 1 in one of the most dangerous places in the world?
Why didn't anyone respond to the attack?
Why didn't anyone call the Brits as they had forces nearby?
IS this a cover up?
Why isn't this being addressed by the administration? If you don't talk about it, it didn't happen?
Security in these third world shitholes comes from within. These animals that live there understand medieval torture so they obey the leader. Gadaffi was becoming quite the upstanding puppet so it boggles the mind why the CIA would support a coup, and it was the Gadaffi regime that kept the diplomatic mission safe.
ReplyDeleteStevens was certainly getting chatter regarding his upcoming demise, but the Hillary and Dear Mullah either didn't believe the newly installed Muslim Bros would attack or they were complicit....or I guess for you real numbskulls, they could have been aware and didn't care because as a matter of fact, it could have been stopped.
Stevens was State Dept working with the CIA to overthrow Gadaffi. The arms the US gave to the Muslim Bros in previously stated persuit were trying to be reaquired by Stevens so they could be redeployed in Sryia. Apparently arms to third worlders is a political No-No back in the States so when the CIA gets some, they try to get a lot of use from them.
What only Hillary and the Usama bin Obama know for sure is why. Did Stevens "go off the reservation"? Was there really a US State Dept sanctioned "torture" facility being operated by Stevens as the Broadwell chick claimed Petreaus told her?
No matter how you slice this, it's fucked.
But I'm glad Max sees it as just Republican partisanship. Cause he's really up to snuff from all the HuffPo he reads.
Benghazi was a bump in a road to some biblical geo-political changes.
Gadaffi was becoming quite the upstanding puppet so it boggles the mind why the CIA would support a coup
DeleteThe CIA gets it marching orders as does every government agency from the top.
Yes. My use of the term CIA was intended to imply the full spectrum of those responsible for the decisions to carry out the actions
