Very disturbing and close to home for me

Well, i'm sure this will turn out to be a ridiculous shit show that most of our public rampage shootings are. Sadly, this has everything a liberal would hope for in terms of shock value and I'm sure I will see some stupid ass headline in the Daily Koz pointing to it. Surely, most of our public shooters have mental illness. Yet, it continues to baffle me that we cannot come to the very simple conclusion that this country is obsessed with it's personal anger and with it's equally obsessive belief that it is somehow persecuted to the point of having no freedom. This story flat out disgusts me. If this shit is really true about throwing the Don't Tread on Me Flag on the bodies of the slain officers, I hope it finally starts to wake people up to how fucking whacked a certain segment of our society has become. Oh, and what about the guy with the concealed weapon who walked up and promptly got himself killed?

I don't fear guns, but I very much live in fear of scared people who possess guns.

  1. Hey Max.

Why is it we cannot address the mental illness issue in this country?

Seems the Daily KOS left out the Swastika left at the sight, an over site or biased reporting? I'm beginning to believe the media is fueling the anger in this country by selective reporting, mis reporting and of course the lack of reporting. Perhaps it's to much reporting.

Is it the sensationalism that fuels the copy cat people in our society? I wonder.

    1. Why can't we address mental illness? Because it would cost money. It's that simple. I didn't see a Daily KOS link yet, the link I posted had the Swastika piece in it. The fox link I posted said they believed it was more of fear of the government than white supremacist stuff. Not sure why they tossed a Swastika in there.

I personally don't buy the sensationalism thing as much. I think that the majority of these people who go off are fervently immersed in their views and hence, sharply disconnected from reality. They also strike me as being particularly pissed off, enraged I guess.

    2. Is it because the economy has been trashed forever with low paying jobs?
Lack of hope for a better tomorrow?
I don't ever recall this much anger in the US.

    3. NRA on Texans:“Now we love AR-15s and AKs as much as anybody, and we know that these sorts of semiautomatic carbines are among the most popular, fastest selling firearms in America today,” the gun-rights group says, praising Texas as an “independent-minded and liberty-loving place.”
“Recently, demonstrators have been showing up in various public places, including coffee shops and fast food restaurants, openly toting a variety of tactical long guns,” the group says, adding that such tactics can put off some people, even in Texas, “which is second to none for its robust gun culture. We applaud Texans for that, but a small number have recently crossed the line from enthusiasm to downright foolishness.”

Foolishness. Even the NRA is seeing that some people are carrying things too far. Lou I have to disagree on the mental illness in this case. These people seemed to know exactly what they were doing. They are fools who died a fools death. Too bad 3 others had to die because of their ignorance. I'd like to see a toxicology report on this one. You would hope that they were stoned or drunk to pull off such a heinous act. If not we have a problem in this country.
And I might add this severely damages the argument that gun free zones promote this kind of behavior. These people killed three men who were all armed. When they got the drop on you all the guns in the world won't help unless you are a superman.

    4. That's right Rick, they are all just gun toting right wing people.

      Your delusional.

      It's called mental illness.

    5. In part, I do think jobs has something to do with it. There used to be a situation where even the dimmest bulbs in the drawer could work and feed a family. It's gotten a lot tougher in that respect. That said, I still believe a very sharp turn has occurred in our society wherein we have many, many individuals have bought into an extreme, and nonsensical view that they are being persecuted.

When I was in my early 20's and mentally feasting on Ayn Rand, I had quite a different view of the world and a fair amount of anger at a perceived robbing of MY liberty and MY money through taxes. I'd like to think that I matured a bit and adopted a bigger picture. Today, there is far more of that angry shit to feed on. Of course there are just as many far left wing rabbit holes to fall down, but I have yet to see someone show up at a mall with an AR-15 and start mowing people down while yelling, "I speak for the trees".

There are always mentally unstable people in society, however, I also believe that society can and does provide limits. In some communities, there is an acceptance of extreme, narcissistic views of persecution and open talk of armed revolution. Most in those circles are probably all talk, but they nonetheless are incubators for the unstable to thrive in.

When the NRA posted what Rick mentioned here, it was an acknowledgment that even they are shrewd enough to realize when a particular behavior is reaching a societal limit of tolerance. I dont' blame conservatism or libertarianism per se, but there is a solid tolerance within that group for bitter narcissism, shit talking about violent revolution and intoxicating love for the ability to create personal arsenals. Oh yeah, and they hate the gubmint too. Liberals and Democrats still have to wear a badge of shame for groups like the Weathermen and eventually, I believe a majority of our society is going to have had enough of the petulant bitterness and hate spewing of the way way right and make them pay for it politically.

    6. Louman when you read the details of this tragedy these people obviously were very aware of what they were about to do and did. Every time a gun is misused you cannot attribute it to mental illness. Now these kids who shoot up the school of movie theater because they feel someone has trashed their reputation and soul, yeah I get that. Seems to be none of that here. This seems to be a spontaneous unplanned action.

    7. Right a suicide pact is normal behavior. Got it.

    8. How do you know there was a suicide pact Lou? You involved with them. They were cornered in the backroom of a walmart. She probably saw it as the only was out. You are very quick to judge everything and everybody except George Zimmerman who has turned out to be a total idiot.

    9. I have read blogs by at least one person on this site who claimed that the revolution was coming and that police are nazis and gestapo, So it seems to me the swastika was a sign that these people thought the same, not that they were nazis themselves. Make sense?

    10. Suicide pact is a product of your media. Didn't read the articles on the web???

The couple then exchanged gunfire with officers in the back of the store and killed themselves in an apparent suicide pact, Las Vegas Police spokesman Larry Hadfield said.

McMahill said Amanda fired several rounds into Jerad then took her own life with a single shot to the head.

    12. (CNN) -- Sheriff's deputies delivered the fatal wound that killed a man who, along with a woman, gunned down two police officers and a civilian in Las Vegas on Sunday, a sheriff's department official said Wednesday.

Authorities had earlier said the woman shot and killed her partner before taking her own life. But Assistant Sheriff Kevin McMahill told reporters Wednesday that a review of forensic evidence at the scene and autopsy results showed that the male gunman was fatally wounded by police.

"We made a determination that she did not shoot him. He did suffer a gunshot wound and we believe the entrance wound was here," McMahill said, pointing to his own collarbone, "which would have been consistent with information that the female shot the male."

  2. Hey Max,
    How the school thing going?

A child of privilege, Elliot Rodger should have had the world at his feet.

Instead, the son of a British Hollywood director and ethnic Chinese mother was self conscious about his race, and he had particular hatred for two groups: The women he says kept him a virgin for all of his 22 years, and the men they chose instead.

In video after video, the college student roamed Santa Barbara like an invisible man, narrating his lonely existence in a strange, clinical tone, consumed by a feeling of total alienation.

Last November, Oklahoma City police officers went to check on an elderly woman after relatives reported they hadn't heard from her in a while.

At 77, Janet Hume was living with her adult son, Gerald, who the family said was schizophrenic. Since she typically kept in close contact with relatives, police decided to investigate. "Janet Hume told her that Gerald has recently bought several guns," according to the police affidavit, which was seeking a search warrant for the Hume home. Gerald Hume held police at bay for 11 hours, barricading himself inside the home as a police helicopter flew overhead. During negotiations, police records show Hume admitted shooting his mother in the chest.

People with histories of mental illness and a proclivity toward violence are not supposed to be able to purchase firearms in the United States. But in practice, say experts, a patchwork of state and federal laws only apply to people who have been institutionalized or deemed by authorities to be dangerous.

Federal law mandates background checks meant to keep convicted felons and people with mental illnesses from legally acquiring guns, but the rules only apply to people who buy weapons from licensed dealers -- meaning that people, including those with mental illnesses, can buy what they please from other individuals at gun shows or elsewhere. At the state level, standards vary and are bedeviled by poor tracking and a lack of coordination with federal authorities, making enforcement spotty.

As the Colorado legislature continues to debate gun-control proposals (and Republicans attempt to counter by attacking a Democratic rep for his comments about rape), we're hearing about a mom's decision to turn in Richard Lancaster, her mentally ill son, who allegedly managed to collect an arsenal of weapons online. And while the story is being presented in sensationalized fashion, the questions it raises are key to the ongoing discussion.

In short, no effective system exists that can prevent those with mental illness from getting hold of deadly firearms or reliably predict who may act out in violence.

Seung-Hui Cho, who committed the Virginia Tech massacre in 2007, had been diagnosed with severe anxiety disorder as a child and placed under treatment. But Virginia Tech was prohibited from being told about Cho's mental health problems because of federal privacy laws.

Attorneys for the suspect in the Colorado movie theater shootings said Thursday their client is mentally ill and that they need more time to assess the nature of his illness. James Holmes' lawyers made the disclosure at a court hearing in suburban Denver where news media organizations asked a judge to unseal documents in the case.

    1. School is going pretty good, and it's what I should be doing right now! It's been quite interesting to learn more about the money flows in health care. The whole thing pretty much remains an issue of politics rather than an issue of health. And that's too bad. Gotta a big paper to finish up this week, so I'll probably be fading back out pretty quick.

I tend to agree with the gun nuts that placing tight restrictions on access to firearms is not a solution. It's not my battle except for one thing, there is clearly strong support for some kind of reasonable regulation of firearms at gun shows and the majority will is being squashed but a very small but very well financed segment of America. I don't agree the regulations will fix anything, but when you have that kind of support, you should be able to get something done.

As I said above, there is no money or will to help people deal with mental illness. However, once you take away the types who have schizophrenia or other hallucinatory disorders, you have what I believe are people who can't seem to fit in. Over time, I do believe our country, despite its moments of generosity, has become a nation of people who operate on the principle of, "Fuck off, it's not my problem." The violence to me is a symptom of something deeper, but it's not something we are going to give much thought to fixing.

    2. This morning's report: Two people, including the suspect, were killed in a shooting at a high school in Oregon, police say.

The Multnomah County Sheriff's Office said one student died in the shooting at Reynolds High School in Troutdale, north of Portland, on Tuesday. The shooting suspect also died, Troutdale Police Chief Scott Anderson told reporters, and the situation has been "stablilized." There was no immediate word on additional injuries.

According to authorities, multiple agencies responded to reports of gunfire at the school at approximately 8:07 a.m. The school was immediately placed on lockdown as SWAT and tactical units searched the school.

    3. Troutdale used to be a decent place to live, but the problems of North and Northeast Portland are moving out to Gresham & Troutdale as gentrification takes its toll. And SE Portland, where the Clackamas Town Center shooting took place at the end of 2012, has been named "Felony Flats".

As for these two nut cases that committed these horrendous acts as a mature person I understand that out of 310 million people there will be a certain amount of mutants. Right wing left wing has nothing at all to do with it. The cause just exposed the insanity.
God bless those that lost their lives and their grieving families.

Frankly ric, your inane comments in the face of this sort of tragedy does not advance the discussion.

    2. Spare me William I was a cop for 7 years. There is nothing worse then a cop killer. Especially a sane one. I have been in a shootout William it is no fun and nothing like going to war. You are shooting at Americans, people who live similar to how you do. It ain't easy. So William don't tell me about close to home. Been there and done that.

    1. Sorry Rick, I remain a zero percenter not participating in this fallacy called government. This year hit 10% adjusted tax rate, 2014 goal, 5%. Don't think I can get below that with my income sources but will certainly try. Keep up the good work supporting the bama regime. How about all the kids Mexico is dumping in the US while imprisoning one of our military. Time to begin mass deportations.

Personally not my problem, deal with it Rick.
