Hottest May on record.

NASA

May was really, really hot.

How hot was it?

It was so hot that two leading trackers of global temperatures determined that there’s never been a hotter May on record. NASA found the average temp around the world last month was 1.38 degrees Fahrenheit hotter than the long-term average.

And these guys have been tracking temperatures for 135 years.

The Japanese Meteorological Agency came up with similar results and found that March and April also combined to make for the most scorching spring on record.

There’s another closely watched report coming from the NOAA this week, and it typically falls in line with the other two, according to Mashable.

By all indications, 2014 is shaping up to compete for the hottest year we’ve ever seen, especially with the prospects of even warmer weather patterns on the way.

The European Centre for Medium-range Weather Forecasts is predicting that there’s a 90% chance of an El Niño occurring this year. If that happens, look for more hurricanes in the Pacific and more temperature records to fall.

Oh really? I wasn't aware that NASA existed in 1879.

One hundred and thirty five years ago, in 1879:

Jan 16th - January record 13" of snow falls in NYC (broken Jan 7, 1996)
Mar 27th - Longest championship fight (136 rounds)
Apr 8th - Milk was sold in glass bottles for 1st time
May 8th - George Selden files for 1st patent for a gasoline-driven automobile
May 30th - 92°F highest temperature ever recorded in Cleveland in May
Aug 17th - Ferdinand de Lesseps forms French Panama Canal Company
Oct 19th - Thomas Edison demonstrates electric light
Nov 4th - Elkins patents refrigerating apparatus

1879, I remember it well. So high tech, so "global." A great year to act as a baseline for your little global warming game. Imagine that, the first demonstration of the incandescent bulb. So advanced, so high tech, so enlightened.

So GLOBAL! Temperature readings faithfully coming in from all over the globe, oh I'm sure.

    3. At that time it was called the Weather Bureau signed into law by U S Grant in 1870. here's the history funny you can find out all that crap about 1879 but you couldn't find the weather bureau

Established: In the Department of Agriculture by an act of October 1, 1890 (26 Stat. 653).
Predecessor Agencies: Smithsonian Institution (meteorological functions, 1847-70)
In the War Department: Office of the Surgeon General (meteorological functions, 1818-70)
Office of the Chief Signal Officer (meteorological functions, 1870-90)

Transfers: To the Department of Commerce by Reorganization Plan No. IV of 1940, effective June 30, 1940; to the Environmental Science Services Administration, Department of Commerce, by Reorganization Plan No. 2 of 1965, effective July 13, 1965; to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Department of Commerce, by Reorganization Plan No. 4 of 1970, effective October 3, 1970.

Functions: Provided basic weather service in support of federal agencies and the general public, including weather forecasting and collecting, and disseminating temperature, rainfall, and climatic data for the United States.

Abolished: By Department of Commerce Organization Order 25-5A, effective October 9, 1970.

Successor Agencies: National Weather Service, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Department of Commerce.

    4. ric, they can't find two years of IRS emails and you're going to tell me that they were accurately measuring global temperatures in 1879.

    5. Obviously Japan has a weather bureau. We probably developed it for them to have something to do but launch wars against other nations. Ha found it 1956 the Japanese Meteorological Agency was formed.

This Noaa report is out April 2014 has tied April 2010 as the hottest April on record since 1880. It's funny William, NOAA can cite these records that you claim don't exist.

May was also 1 degree warmer then the average for the entire 20th century. But William it's one degree that's how climate change works. It's not a sudden shift but a gradual one. The question William is not if the earth is warming the question is why. Is it mankind or is it a cycle. We will probably never really know in our lifetimes it's such a gradual shift. But observers have determined that the pace of warming has accelerated in the last few years. Is it normal cycles William or is it man caused?

    6. So just deny that facts that's what you always do when you can't win. Do you have any idea who helped developed the Thermometer? Ever heard of Galileo. Yeah he died in 1642. I suspect in the next 250 years it got to be a pretty accurate instrument probably not changed much since 1880. The first mercury thermometer was manufactured by Daniel Fahrenheit in 1724. He got to set the American scale because the properties of mercury in measuring temperature was pretty damn accurate. That still leaves 150 years for further development before 1880. So yeah William temperature readings in 1880 were probably pretty damn accurate.

I guess you didn't bother to read this link from the other day. Afraid of the truth William?

    8. Scientists have discovered over two million species and estimate that there Are millions more left to discover. Can we measure a simple thing like temperature in a static location, sure. Can we measure temperature in underwater volcanos and analyze their effects on global warming or cooling conditions? Highly doubtful.

Can we measure total methane release in ever changing ice covered areas? More or less this year, next year, next decade, ,,,how much, how little, impact???

Sunspots? The suns activity? Varied? I guess!!

Your hubris overestimates the impact of man on climate. Man like every living thing is a part of ecology not something separate in a box that can be tweaked by well paid insiders who's existence depends on keeping everyone on edge.

So the answer ric is no, I don't believe the climate bullshit you profess.

    9. But William because we have critical thinking and problem solving skills mankind is the first species to live outside the basic ecology of earth. We figured out how to save fire we found at the edges of volcanos or from lightening strikes for warmth and cooking. (name another species that cooks it's food). We have steadily improved transportation from walking to riding other species to simple cars, to sophisticated cars, trains and aircraft. We have moved into warm houses with manmade electric, plastic, steel and metal. Yes William each of those things puts us outside the normal ecological scope of the earth's existence and balance. We are takers of more of the ecosystem then we put back. We cut down rain forests that help balance the air. We build tall smokestacks to push our pollutants well into the atmosphere. We cloud the air with the results of our overblown civilization. Yes William civilization is outside the scope of the balance of earth's balance. Mankind hasn't always been here. The dinosaurs couldn't save themselves and they lived within the bounds of the ecosystem. Mankind's civilization will eventually implode on earth. We won't be around to see it because it could be 1000 years in the future. But we could possibly make it 1050 years with action now. But see William that's the difference between libs and conservs. Your attitude is that if all this is happening it ain't gonna affect you so fuck it. For us libs, well maybe we can make some changes to extend mankind's reign for a few more years even if we can't be apart of it.

    2. Sorry guys I do keep my home temperature moderate about 78 down stairs in the summer and about 75 upstairs. Winter we try to stay about 68-69 on both thermostats but with the new born in the house we did keep it a little warmer this past year. we actually do the majority of our heating with a gas log fireplace. Would like to go back to wood but it would be expensive to convert this fire place (it's ventless so that would require building a chimney and I really don't have the time anymore to cut and split wood although I sure miss it. Saves a lot of money also. I own two vehicles and they both get over 30 miles per gallon. Doing the best I can for now. As for the elite comment William, I am far from that. I would probably be the most down to earth SOB that you have ever argued with. But hell this is what kind of comments come from you guys when you really can't refute facts and truth.
William mankind does live outside the realm of the normal earth ecological cycle. Again it is because we are smart and inventive and we do a lot of shit that actually does harm the earth. Of course you are probably of the belief that God put all this here just for humans to use and abuse. That is horse shit right there. really double horse shit.

What other species replants entire forests?

What other species takes in and cares for wounded animals?

What other species sets aside habitat for other species?

I dare you to spend two evenings outdoors without protection to see if you are part of our natural ecosystem or not.

And all of that is still un natural in the ecosystem. Although treatment of our sewage is a nice gesture for the planet. What other species pollutes William? Answer none.

    6. Global Warming & Climate Change Myths

Here is a summary of global warming and climate change myths, sorted by recent popularity vs what science says. Click the response for a more detailed response. You can also view them sorted by taxonomy, by popularity, in a print-friendly version, with short URLs or with fixed numbers you can use for permanent references.

Climate Myth vs What the Science Says

      1 "Climate's changed before"
Climate reacts to whatever forces it to change at the time; humans are now the dominant forcing.

      2 "It's the sun"
In the last 35 years of global warming, sun and climate have been going in opposite directions

      3 "It's not bad"
Negative impacts of global warming on agriculture, health & environment far outweigh any positives

      4 "There is no consensus"
97% of climate experts agree humans are causing global warming.

      5 "It's cooling"
The last decade 2000-2009 was the hottest on record.

      6 "Models are unreliable"
Models successfully reproduce temperatures since 1900 globally, by land, in the air and the ocean.

      7 "Temp record is unreliable"
The warming trend is the same in rural and urban areas, measured by thermometers and satellites.

8 "Animals and plants can adapt"
Global warming will cause mass extinctions of species that cannot adapt on short time scales.

      9 "It hasn't warmed since 1998"
For global records, 2010 is the hottest year on record, tied with 2005.

      10 "Antarctica is gaining ice"
Satellites measure Antarctica losing land ice at an accelerating rate.

11 "Ice age predicted in the 70s"
The vast majority of climate papers in the 1970s predicted warming.

      12 "CO2 lags temperature"
CO2 didn't initiate warming from past ice ages but it did amplify the warming.

      13 "Climate sensitivity is low"
Net positive feedback is confirmed by many different lines of evidence.

14 "We're heading into an ice age"
Worry about global warming impacts in the next 100 years, not an ice age in over 10,000 years.

      15 "Ocean acidification isn't serious"
Ocean acidification threatens entire marine food chains.

      16 "Hockey stick is broken"
Recent studies agree that recent global temperatures are unprecedented in the last 1000 years.

17 "Climategate CRU emails suggest conspiracy"
A number of investigations have cleared scientists of any wrongdoing in the media-hyped email incident.

18 "Hurricanes aren't linked to global warming"
There is increasing evidence that hurricanes are getting stronger due to global warming.

19 "Al Gore got it wrong"
Al Gore book is quite accurate, and far more accurate than contrarian books.

      20 "Glaciers are growing"
Most glaciers are retreating, posing a serious problem for millions who rely on glaciers for water.

      21 "It's cosmic rays"
Cosmic rays show no trend over the last 30 years & have had little impact on recent global warming.

      22 "1934 - hottest year on record"
1934 was one of the hottest years in the US, not globally.

      23 "It's freaking cold!"
A local cold day has nothing to do with the long-term trend of increasing global temperatures.

24 "Extreme weather isn't caused by global warming"
Extreme weather events are being made more frequent and worse by global warming.

25 "Sea level rise is exaggerated"
A variety of different measurements find steadily rising sea levels over the past century.

26 "It's Urban Heat Island effect"
Urban and rural regions show the same warming trend.

27 "Medieval Warm Period was warmer"
Globally averaged temperature now is higher than global temperature in medieval times.

      28 "Mars is warming"
      Mars is not warming globally.

    10. Do you see a solution Mick?

As long as the world population continues to grow the outcome is preordained as more people consume more. How do you change the population cure downward? China tried it with the one child policy, a failure.

The easy things have been done in the US and many parts of Europe. We produce less in pollution now than in 2007. China continues their breakneck growth in their economy as the US economy contracts as more regulations come on line. How do you slow them down put controls in place and slow their population growth without a revolution?

In the past Nature provided the solution with the Black Plague, the Spanish Flu, wars, famine. Our future?

    12. Iouman, as I said before, over population is driving human produced climate change. How do you persuade people to quit reproducing? I don't know. As long as people need to travel, eat, and stay warm, pollution will exist, so the challenge is to discover acceptable ways to minimize emissions which adversely affect the weather. So far we are doing a lousy job, aren't we?

      Delete
    13. Do what every you want. Return the USA to caves and tents, the outcome will be the same only a year later.

Until the issue is addressed on a worldwide basis, bring China to the table, your wasting your time and transferring more jobs and industry overseas, making the middle class poorer.

A few years ago I was in China and the pollution was horrible, no one cared as long as they could feed their families, move ahead, purchase a few luxuries.

  4. The EPA Considers All Life Forms To Be A Threat To The Planet
Posted on June 22, 2014 by stevengoddard

Almost all life forms emit either CO2 or CH4, which the EPA considers to be dangerous greenhouse gases.

Humans exhale 40,000 PPM CO2, which will eventually and inevitably become an excuse for the government to list humans as biohazards or other toxic waste.

    2. Wiki:
      Projections
Main articles: World population estimates and Projections of population growth

Long-term global population growth is difficult to predict. The United Nations and the US Census Bureau both give different estimates – according to the latter, the world population reached seven billion in March 2012,[104] while the UN asserted that this occurred in late 2011.[105] The UN has issued multiple projections of future world population, based on different assumptions. From 2000 to 2005, the UN consistently revised these projections downward, until the 2006 revision, issued on March 14, 2007, revised the 2050 mid-range estimate upwards by 273 million.

Average global birth rates are declining fast, but vary greatly between developed countries (where birth rates are often at or below replacement levels) and developing countries (where birth rates typically remain high). Different ethnicities also display varying birth rates. Death rates can change rapidly due to disease epidemics, wars and other mass catastrophes, or advances in medicine.

In his 1798 work An Essay on the Principle of Population, as it affects the future improvement of society with remarks on the speculations of Mr. Godwin, M. Condorcet, and other writers; the British scholar Thomas Malthus incorrectly predicted that continued population growth would exhaust the global food supply by the mid-19th century. The essay was written to refute what Malthus called, the unattainable Utopian ideas of William Godwin and Marquis de Condorcet; presented in Political Justice and The Future Progress of the Human Mind. In 1968, Paul R. Ehrlich reprised this argument in The Population Bomb, predicting that mass global famine would occur in the 1970s and 1980s.[120]

    4. @ William, goose shit horse shit my shit your shit it's all natural it's all baked into the ecology. You obviously don't understand what ecological systems are. In fact that fact that we treat our sewage is in itself outside the normal ecological cycle. Look when Montgomery shits in the yard at night( by the way he has busted the north/south axis bullshit of a previous thread) Sometimes it's the next evening until I can pick it up. And guess what flies are there, sometimes ants have built a mound next to it or there are even some bugs under it William. Yes many species maybe some who have yet to be discovered count on the excretions from other species as a source of food. That is the norm in an ecological system. I am still trying to figure out why the ants come. Montgomery eats hard food maybe they can pick undigested crumbs out of the shit I don't know. Why do I pay so much attention to the dog shit. Well my little buddy has struggled in the past with whipworms. Do you know where whipworms originate? Rabbit shit. Does Montgomery eat rabbit shit? No he does not. but the larvae of the whip worm burrows into the soil and when the dog walks across it microscopic larvae stick to his paws. When he grooms himself as all dogs will and licks his paws he ingests these larvae and gets infected. There is an excellent lesson for you on a subject you don't understand, no not shit but ecology and how it all works together.

    5. Ric I don't think you were correcting for magnetic north. Start your observations over. Redouble your efforts for the sake of humanity. Click your heels three times at midnight as you scoop up Montgomery's poop.

Spending your time in this manner will be surely more productive than spewing your pap here.
