Only in America

Congressional Democrats have introduced legislation to ban the use of the words "husband" and "wife" in federal laws, saying they discriminate against gay couples. "Gendered" terms "reflect prejudice and discrimination," said U.S. Rep. Lois Capps, and should be replaced by "spouse" and "married couple." The Week Staff

  1. That's a little ridiculous. We made the jump to acceptance of gay marriage, maybe we could say that's pretty good for now and let the rest take care of itself? Just my 0.02.

  2. Yeah, I agree with max. The Supreme ' s redefined marriage so who cares what any words mean?

For the sake of the gay lobby why don't we all just call ourselves faggots.

    1. The supreme's redefined it? Yeah, that kind crazy sells pretty well in some circles, but it doesn't make it true.

    2. Yes the supream's told the several States that their feelings about faggots being married don't matter. The Federals will enforce sodomy.

Husband and wife, bride and groom, gay or happy? Historical words cease to have meaning. Half a dozen ivy leaguers in black gowns said so. So it be so.

    3. The federals will enforce sodomy? Why is it that people who are against gay marriage are so obsessed with gay sex?

    4. The Federals won't enforce sodomy? Just try to refuse to bake a wedding cake for a faggots wedding.

Doesn't the justice department have better things to do besides enforcing rainbow decorated cakes and FIFA corruption?

    5. Actually, yes, the justice department does have better things to do, and I have to admit, the cake thing is ridiculous. That said, I think it is ridiculous for a business owner to say to someone "I won't make a cake for you because the bible says you are going to hell". And again, no is forcing the baker to picture, fantasize about or engage in sodomy.

    6. No, but they are forcing the independent business people to deal with somodmites against their will all in the name of social engineering.

      Delete
    7. Not really. Business people all the time decide they don't want to deal with someone they find objectionable and then they don't do business with them. A bakery could easily say they are too busy. In some small pieces of America where pride is measured in whether the broken washer in your front yard is newer that the broken washer in your neighbor's front yard, this might really mean something. What's going to bother you more down the road is that plenty of business people who understand that you are in business to make money are going to be more than happy to sell cakes to gay people.

Why are conservatives so obsessed with anal sex?

    9. Max, the generalizations you make about conservatives are as wrong as the generalizations made about liberals.

    11. Max I could care less who you're blowing. Here in Jersey we've got more gays than you can shake a stick at and I work with them and respect them.

But, if a person has a religious belief that precludes them from doing business with sodomites than their rights have to be protected. This is best accomplished State by State not by some one size fits all supream ruling.

    12. Lou,

I fully understand the shortsightedness of generalizations. Still, for people like William here, Santorum, and a host of other conservative types, there is a seeming constant need to define gay people by gay sex. Not as people who, for whatever reason, choose to have a same sex partner, but instead as nothing more than an individual associated with deviant sex. The argument that God says its wrong might have some bearing if we actually strove to live by the rest of the commandments, which we don't. Some people are going to spend the rest of their lives in bitterness over issues like this, and they are still welcome to do so, just as some white idiots are still free to be angry about civil rights for black people. As I have said many times before, this simply isn't an issue for people my age and younger.

    13. William,

So now we are at the heart of the matter, God says it's wrong, therefore our laws should reflect what God says. TS can weigh in on this, but near as I can tell, the Constitution does not designate marriage only between a man or woman any more than it does or doesn't stipulate whether it's wrong to be gay.

The states argument on this is kind of weak to me. While people like you choose to rally around a ridiculous cake issue, there are much bigger issues that actually mean something in real life. Gay people live everywhere and don't cause any more disruption to the people around them than anyone else. To say that they should not have the same made up rights as straight people who choose to marry is silly, especially considering that the only reason to do so is because of religion. I see this issue in healthcare all the time where some family member shows up and starts throwing around stupid terms like the ones you are using with the sole intent of smearing everyone involved with their anger. It's disgusting. You may work with "them" as you say, but your comments make it clear that you don't respect them. At best, perhaps you angrily restrain yourself from calling them faggots even though they richly deserve your scorn because the bible says so.

    14. As a conservative I take offense at your comments as I like you could care what other people do. The right has it's biases as well as the left. Both are equally as egregious.

The problem with people today, pick a minority group, when they have a victory, a point, an advantage they push their advantage to the next level which does nothing but further anger the masses of the left or the right.

Simply put I could care less what William or Rick thinks as both are extremists from the opposite ends of the spectrum. The upside is there are more of us than them. Unfortunate they make more noise and we are forced to hear it.

    15. p.s. You will never convince Rick or William they are wrong on any issue and it's a waste of time.

    16. I have to agree wholeheartedly with your second para, which was kind of my point all the way at the top. Near as I can tell, and I'm open to seeing other arguments, the biggest opposition to gay marriage is based on religion. With my religious upbringing, I get where people are coming from on that and I feel no need to convince them they are wrong. That said, what if we went and allowed every business to discriminate against anyone they wanted to for any reason at all. What if religious hospitals decided to say they won't treat gay people with HIV because God says homosexuality is wrong? What if my hospice said we won't treat anyone who is a biggot because God says that is wrong also?

I agree that it is quite common for a minority group to push a point to a ridiculous level. And then people eventually shrug their shoulders, walk away, and people continue to believe whatever they want to believe. I care about this issue solely in terms of thinking that it is ridiculous to deny consenting gay people the same made up right that straight people have. When it comes to convincing people what they should THINK it's okay for gay people to marry, that's not a windmill I'm going to charge at.

    17. As a business owner, I would never discriminate in providing services to a gay business owner. I have to many other reason to not provide services to use that lame excuse.

You will never change Williams mind as I will never change Rick's mind. Extremism is what it is and you nor I could ever change that. My beliefs are my beliefs. If God, Allah, or any other deity dislikes gay marriage, they can fix it, we as people cannot We just need to learn to live together without imposing our views on one another. That is the trick.

Seemingly a tough axiom these days, but it sums it up well.

    19. Instead of the left and right marginalizing each other, we need to marginalize the extremists.

    20. Why don't you two centrists (gafaw) get a room.

A socialist and a guy that cut and ran with his tail behind his legs when the heat was on because he didn't want to pay taxes.

I'll considered the perspectives of both of your comments. But I could really give a shit. Pious couple of ass holes you two are.

    21. Your faith is beyond weak William.

But I tell you not to oppose an evil person. If someone slaps you on your right cheek, turn your other cheek to him as well.

For when you pass judgement on your fellow man, you condemn yourself

As a side note, I no longer need to work for existence. I work when I want to. The upside is I don't support people like yourself or anyone else. I have enough to take care of my family and parents which is one of the more important things after my family.

Not sure when you reached the level of deity where you can now sit in judgement of other. A pity you've lost yourself in your hatred. It rivals Ricks which isn't something to be proud of.

    22. You were the one Iouman labeling others extremists a few paragraphs above. If you care to compromise your way to utopia with the likes of socialist max, be my guest. If the two of you want to cohabit sexually or non sexually, be.my guest. If you want to live off the grid (while communicating on the internet), be my guest.

Just don't come here with your Trojan horse arguments pretending to be a centrist. I thought you were better than that. Better than agreeing with the baby killers. Better than accepting at face value the shallow posits of socialist max and his Bill Mahr mind set. Better than thinking as Max and ric do that all creative thought comes from a school bus driver coffee clutch, restaurant prep area, or hospital break room.

Yes the Declaration and Constitution have roots based on religion despite what max (Trotsky) thinks. If a hospital grounded in faith cares not to supply birth control pills or abortion on demand they jolly well can tell the Supreme ' s and those ass holes on the hill to take a fucking leap.

Google Planned parenthood, selling baby body parts, on YouTube if you'd like to see where this socialist society has evolved to. Be my guest if you'd like to continue to compromise with these modern day Mengele's.

    23. You don't get to decide about abortion. The SCOTUS has made that decision and there s nothing you can do about.

People have the right to make that decision for them selves and live with the consequences morally, mentally for the rest of their lives and afterward. You do not have the right to tell others what to do. Everyone chooses right or wrong. With every decision in life, there are consequences. I do not like abortion yet so many willing to condemn abortion laws and walk away from needy children in need of homes everyday in life. I have no children of my own and chose to adopt. THIS country and THIS countries laws made it nearly impossible for some to adopt in the US. I went overseas and adopted a child. Today she is a healthy bright college student and a wonderful compassionate person.

For when you pass judgement on your fellow man, you condemn yourself

No one made you god or gave you the right to pass judgement on another. YOU do not get to decide.

    24. The PP abortion mills which are Federally funded churn out over three hundred thousand dead babies a year. Now we know they trade in selected tissue for resale. Over fifty five million American's never saw the light of day.

And you support SCOTUS. And you agree with the socialists that this is good policy. Dreadfully sad.
