Police in Lafayette, Louisiana, identified an Alabama drifter as the suspect who killed three people, including himself, and wounded at least nine others in a mass shooting Thursday night at a movie theater.

Police Chief Jim Craft identified the gunman on Friday morning as John Russell Houser, “a drifter” from Alabama who was staying in a Lafayette motel.

  2. LAFAYETTE, La. — The gunman who killed two women and wounded nine people in a theater here Thursday night had a history of mental illness and financial trouble, officials said, and reportedly vented hatred of liberals and the government online, predicting the collapse of the United States.

Here is my thought on this topic: People who spread hate messages against Conservatives or Liberals don't realize that such postings can influence the mentally retarded to commit act of violence, thinking they are being patriotic. How did this man get a gun?

  3. How did this man get a gun?
Because the second amendment with its archaic wording and liberal interpretation encouraged him to own a firearm.” A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." I submit a degree of mental incompetence is a prerequisite for those who uphold the literal interpretation of the second in the face of incontrovertible evidence of the harm it is doing to a great nation.

    1. Authorities on Friday identified the lone gunman who opened fire in a Louisiana movie theater the night before, killing two women and injuring nine others before shooting himself, as 59-year-old “drifter” John Russell Houser and said he bought the gun legally last year.

At a Friday news conference, police said John Russell Houser purchased the .40-caliber semiautomatic handgun legally at a pawnshop in Phenix City, Alabama, in 2014 and that he had visited the theater before the attack, possibly to see if it would be a "soft target."

Houser fired a handgun at least 15 times in a slow and methodical manner inside the theater before turning it on himself, according to state authorities.

I am with you King. I interpret this as the people are the militia and the need guns. Also in 1791 when this poorly thought out amendment was conceived people needed a firearm for many other reasons then war. Hunting was a big way in which people provided their families with meat and game, the frontier was occupied by hostile Indian tribes upset by the encroachment on their ancestral lands, and the peoples wish not to keep a standing army made it kind of necessary. Well my friend it is 2015 we have the most powerful fighting force in the world we have militarized police forces nationwide and the militias which sucked at war anyway have been replaced by the national guard. Now being a foreigner I don't know how well you are informed on that but each state keeps within it's boundaries a National Guard made up of fulltime soldiers and weekend warriors who can be called out at a moments notice for many reasons. Most notably is to assist in disaster recovery and property protection after a major natural disaster and they are also used to help local governments quell riots and civil disturbances. These units are what used to be considered the state militia but because they fought so poorly they were put under the dept of the army by the Dick Act in 1902 and are today trained almost as well as the regular Army.

    3. Yes Rick, I have some little knowledge of the National Guard and I can applaud its intention. On many occasions it is the National Guard which is at the forefront of the efforts to restore normality following either civil commotion or natural disaster. The Militias are of course no longer required for their original intent. Now however we hear of militant groups of gun happy citizens who openly usurp the power of the government or its appointed agents. In particular I hear of the activities along the southern border where modern day Rambo’s, having watched to many Clint Eastwood movies, strut their stuff as they act like schoolboys. Of course it is these very same moronic idiots who are most vociferous in their opposition to gun control.
      Cheers from Aussie
NB The Dick act is another question and useful for further debate sometime.
