The New Economy

60 Minutes did a story on disability payments by the government tonight.   They said that in some areas the disability payments may be much as 15% of the total economy.  The thinking is that these payments carry people from the last bits of unemployment payments to the first payments of Social Security.  Talk about a culture which has become completely dependent on the government for their security.  This is not the America that I was taught to admire.  What has gone wrong?  Is it the socialist vision of the world that has invaded our thinking or the complete greed of the controllers of the capitalistic economy who have wrecked their own playhouse?

  1. I guess it’s time to revisit this comment stormy : have you ever heard of a company called Public Consulting Group? What PCG does is help states move people from the state public welfare rolls into a federal disability program(s) programs you and I are paying for. And what's the top states using PCG. South Carolina headed by that big mouth republican Nikki Haley, Georgia headed by Republican Nathan Deal, Tennessee headed by Republican Bill Haslam and his 78% repub rubber stamp legislature, and the most Republican state in the Union Oklahoma, Headed by Repub Mary Fallin and a state legislature of 150 reps and sens than contains only 41 democrats. So while the conservatives are telling you all this bad stuff they are, behind your back, causing a lot of it.

    1. rick,

We saw that piece last night, and I was appalled at the apparent waste. That said, are you implying that republican-controlled states are disoproportionately guilty, or that they are not better than democrat-controlled states?

    2. I was struck by the fact that the 6 states with the highest poverty rate are all states where their lawmakers have chosen not to participate in Obamacare. The fat cats get fatter and the poor die. Nice!

    3. No Jean there are a couple of dem states doing the same but those mentioned in my comment are definitely at the head of the class. And when you first saw this comment a couple weeks ago on the other thread (yes you commented) you felt it was just some more progressive spin. But alas my friend it is true. But here's the difference you would expect it from dem states and the party doesn't pull any punches when it comes to helping the disadvantaged whether it is right or wrong. On the other hand a couple of those governors mentioned stand and talk with the tea party all the while doing exactly what they preach against through the back door, enlarging government programs. Hell we progressives are just right up front with it. So who can you really trust the openness of progressiveism or the secret back door dealings of the conservatives. You know with the government shut down most congresspeople deferred their paychecks or gave it away. But how many of both parties have refused the subsidy offered to their staffers and themselves pertaining to Obamacare. Principles no one in Washington has them.

  2. Again, a liberal spin attempts to put states that actually attempt to get or keep their budget in order in some kind of unfavourable light. The expansion of Medicaid adds billions to the cost and for any state enrolling in this expansion they are obligated to continue their participation as opting out later is not an option. The federal government has opted to pay for most of this expansion up to 2020 but has made no commitment beyond that. Two points... States can’t mint money so they must live within their budgets or become basket cases like the out of control federal government. The budget of the Federal government faces considerable headwinds particularly if interest rate on future debt rises significantly. States therefore take a serious gamble on a program that they neither have control of or input into its control. I am sorry if you think prudence is somehow a bad thing but I believe my government should be more frugal with tax money than I am with mine.... I have no debt and haven’t had any for almost 20 years.
    Some facts:
    DEBT PER CAPITA:
9 out of the top ten are Red (least debt)
8 out of the bottom 10 are Blue*(Most debt)
    * North Carolina republicans gained control of the governorship and both houses in 2010 for the first time since 1896. Since 2010 they have gone from one of the worst bond ratings to being in the top 10
    BOND RATINGS:
6 of the top ten are Red
9 if the worst 10 are Blue
    PENSION FUND FAILURES:
Of the 9 ... 5 are Red - Of those
Oklahoma has NEVER had a republican controlled state government before 2011
Louisiana hasn’t had a republican controlled state government before 2007 since 1876
Kentucky has never controlled both houses EVER and no republican governor since 1971

Of the six poorest states you mention I would like to comment
New Mexico has gained republican governor in 2011, first since 2002 and to the best of my knowledge has never controlled the legislature
Louisiana gained republican control in 2007 had hasn’t had it since 1876. Even if you through in your arguments for DixieCrats Louisiana hasn’t had any republican influence sence at least the 80’s
Alabama gained complete control of state government in 2011 for the first time since 1869... again counting for DixieCrat syndrome that dems like to toss about... no republican leadership for some 30 years.
Note two of the poorest states and two of the most indebted states form the southern border with Mexico and have for decades borne the brunt of the lack of federal enforcement of immigration laws.

One of these days Democrats are going to finally realize that you can’t give what you do not have. That day will come .... and it will look like Detroit...... Eventually the people of the United States are going to realize that the prosperity we think is ours has been built on faults money and unrealized wealth... one of this days we will all live like the red states.... we will have no other choice.
