Media Silent as Democrats Take Country 'Hostage' to Demand More Spending

Who are the "hostage-takers" now? Convinced by opinion polls that the media will let them get away with it, Democrats are now refusing to pass a "clean" continuing resolution to end the government shutdown, as well as a straightforward debt ceiling increase, in order to undo the sequester cuts that went into effect earlier this year. They are the ones holding a gun to Republicans' heads, threatening default if their demands are not met.

Just like Obamacare, the sequester--passed in the Budget Control Act of 2011--is the "law of the land." And yet Democrats want to undo it--or else they will keep nearly 400,000 federal employees out of work and let the country risk not paying its bills. Where is the outrage at this disgusting hypocrisy? Where are all the dire warnings about children with cancer and catastrophic interest rates and the end of civilization as we know it?

Democrats are threatening to destroy the economy unless they can increase government spending. And yet the media are silent, their corruption and mendacity on full display. The Wall Street Journal, for its part, is more interested in settling political scores than pointing out Democrats' hypocrisy: according to its editorial Monday, this is all Ted Cruz's fault: he weakened the GOP, provoking the Democrats, you see. Absurd.

So hell-bent are the mainstream media--even its nominally conservative elements--on punishing the Tea Party that they blame it for Democrats' misdeeds. Know that whenever a Democrat or a journalist (they are virtually one and the same) is accusing conservatives of putting politics ahead of the nation's welfare, he or she is exhibiting what psychologists call projection--accusing others of what you do. So it is with the sequester.

The Democrats' new demand should re-invigorate and unite House Republicans. If Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, Sen. Dick "Dinner" Durbin and the rest want to change the Budget Control Act and increase spending, then they must swallow a one-year delay in the individual mandate of Obamacare. That would still be a bad deal for the country, which needs to cut spending and get rid of Obamacare. But it's politically fair.

And note where President Barack Obama is in all of this: nowhere. He, who in his imperial swagger declared Republicans arsonists for failing to pass a continuing resolution or a debt ceiling hike, has done nothing to insist on a deal, or keep his own party in line. Vice President Joe Biden, normally a back-room wheeler-dealer, spent the weekend on vacation at Camp David, open in the shutdown. And where are the media? Disgrace.

  1. From the Christian Science Monitor, here's another version:

For the past few weeks, Democrats from the president on down decried Republican tactics on a potential government shutdown as political hostage-taking on a par with "extortion." So, of course, now that the Republicans are on the run, the Democrats are doing the exact same thing in reverse.

They're saying they want to undo major part of the sequester budget cuts as part of a deal to end the government shutdown and raise the debt limit. It's as though Senate majority leader Harry Reid (D) of Nevada has finally sensed his moment to destroy that product of tea party Republicanism once and for all. One might not even be surprised if "Ride of the Valkyries" was booming from his Senate office this morning.

That is how dramatically the story in Washington has flipped during the two weeks since the government shutdown.
On Oct. 1, the Republicans were on the offensive – or at least thought they were. Sen. Ted Cruz (R) of Texas was at the front of the column, and the cry coming from his ranks was that they would stop at nothing to gut President Obama's signature achievement, the Affordable Care Act.
A government shutdown? A hit to the credit rating of the United States if Congress refused to raise the debt ceiling? Either was preferable to a new government entitlement that they said would erode American liberties and drive the country further into a potentially fatal debt crisis.

Inevitably, they failed, because they had nowhere near the numbers in Congress to win, and – despite their rhetoric – only a minority of Americans wanted to repeal Obamacare. Americans had already decided that question in the 2012 elections, and Republicans' failure to accept that rebuke meant they would receive it again this month. The Democrats, who knew all this, had not the slightest intention of yielding.

But now, members of the Republican establishment have abandoned their tea party insurgents for a more moderate position: They've offered to end the government shutdown and raise the debt ceiling – both only temporarily – so that Congress can discuss reforming Social Security and Medicare.

Democrats, surely would wish for more. A temporary reprieve still holds a hint of "extortion" and still keeps Washington bumping from one fiscal crisis to the next. But, these days, such is the stuff of which compromises are made.

But Senator Reid is having none of it. He knows that polls show most Americans blaming Republicans for the current gridlock. And he knows that the Republican establishment absolutely, positively does not want the government to default on its debt. The tea party, with its grass-roots outrage, might be willing to stay firm on its debt-limit resolve, but establishment Republicans are much more likely to listen to Wall Street, and a failure to raise the debt limit could mean global financial chaos. Not good for 401(k)s.

So Reid is trying his hand at the "extortion" game. The Republicans can only save themselves if they get out of this mess, and he's the only Democrat in Congress who has the power to let that happen. So far, he's letting them dangle.

    1. I believe ultimately the republicans failed because of the hamfisted PR by Boehner.... Had he taken the airtime opportunities to clearly state the case for their position and why it was important they would have done much better. Had they played up the capitol hill exemptions which was rejected by Reid... the tide would have turned on the democrats right then... Rand Paul did a good job stating his position but he never got the camera time that Boehner and McConnell wasted valuable tv opportunities.

As far as ObamaCare being decided by the 2012 election... I don't believe, even though it was his initiative that a single bill passed by congress would seal a presidential election and the election of so many fiscal conservatives says that their is much more at stake than Obamacare, which in my opinion will fail under its own weight anyway....

    2. Mick,

So, that version from the CSM suggests what? That it was bad for the so-called extortion by the Republicans, but it's now good for the Democrats? More hypocrisy, yes?

    3. Hi Jean. I thought the CSM story was well written and researched. As for the extortion, well, as you know, both sides are guilty in equal degree. Politics as usual reigns, but there are two sides to every story and maybe we should consider both before making rash judgements. Hyprocrisy in Politics? Unthinkable.

    4. Mick,

We can agree on helpings of guilt all around. Hypocrisy among DC politicians! Imagine that!

  2. While there has always been the spectrum of bias in certain media... fox and msnbc in particular. It is obvious now that most all media output is either directed by the White House or the various news groups are 'cozy' with the administration.

We can clearly see this in the most recent events in Washington. First was the 2 million bikers to Washington on 911. This rally was in support of those who died on Sept 11 2001 and to the military who have served and in thousands of cases died in reaction to that day. Also on that day was a Muslim demonstration. Originally calling itself 'The Million Muslim March'... quickly changing its name to 'Million American March Against Fear” when it received huge backlash much the way illegals did in their mass demonstrations on immigration.... initially turning out in with their Mexican flags and showing the true loyalties of their movement then wrapping themselves in the American flag when they saw the hostility.

On the day of that demonstration MSM made every effort to make the biker rally all but disappear. But for one the scene blogs and a remark from the Washington DC police department we may have never known exactly what happened on that day. As for the Million Muslim March... they had about 25 folks show up, most of them speakers. We got to listen to some of them on the news... as for that other group that you wouldn’t think even showed up? Well the report from the DC police said in excess of 800,000... some others say over 1 million.... no coverage and it wasn’t even about Obama or the Democrats, just about memorialising dead people!

Recently we heard a lot of hype about howthe 1 million truckers march fizzled. Lots of pictures showing the low turnout on Friday but we didn’t hear much about the rather larger number that gathered through the weekend. Much of the confusion around that even was another person who stuck his ore in to sell a book and making threats that people wouldn’t participate in and a mysterious sever outage for about 24 hours before truckers would have been organizing for the Friday....

We didn’t hear a whole lot about the WWII vets that were turned away from the war memorial even though their event had been arranged long before the shutdown. We also didn’t hear very much about the Trucks that went down town on Sunday to support the vets (well over a thousand but the Washington post claims 100-200)who disassembled the barriers around the memorials, carried them to and deposited them in front of the White House. In attendance were Sarah Palin, Senator Ted Cruz. There were no arrests.....We didn’t really hear much about that.... but

We did hear about the immigration rally that was held, with government blessing, in the same parks closed to others... In attendance there was the illustrious Rep. Nancy Pelosi.

Eight members of Congress were arrested during a Tuesday immigration rally on Washington, D.C.’s National Mall. Several House Democrats sat in the middle of Independence Avenue and blocked rush hour traffic, according to the Star Tribune. The representatives, Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN), Rep. John Lewis (D-GA), Rep. Raul Grijalva (D-AZ), Rep. Joseph Crowley (D-NY), Rep. Al Green (D-TX), Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-IL), Rep. Jan Schawkowsky (D-IL) and Rep. Charlie Rangel (D-NY), were then arrested by U.S. Capitol Police. Of course only 8 congress persons were arrested even though, in attendance were server people who are in the United States of America illegally...

I guess the moral of this story is.... If you want a little attention... You have to raise a little hell! That bike rally, by the way, was quickly put together in reaction to the Million Muslim March... They said that they would be back next year... Who knows... they might have to change their name to Three or Four Million.... People in this country are starting to get upset by the BS.

    1. TheScott.. I was in the Tea Party crowd on 9/12/09. I sat on the edge of Penslyvania avenue and watched people walk by for over four hours. I saw heliocoptors circle overhead hour after hour all day.

The capitol police said they had expected about ten thousand people.

I have attended college football games attended by over 89,000 people. I have attended a soccer game in the old NY Giants stadium that set a record for attendance.

The crowd at 9/12/09 chanted USA, USA, USA,,,,

The ground shook underfoot at he base of the Washington monument and capital building for what seemed like moments after the chanted ended,,,

We are out there. Believe me,

      We are out there,,,
