I did previously ask of readers here if the Benghazi affair was a political beat up. There were replies from both sides and the subject appeared to hibernate,at least on this side of the Pacific ocean. Now we have the petition posted here by Wiliam which appears to be an attempt to breath life into a dead fire. The reference is of little aid to understanding as it is as blatently party political as is the post by William. I am left wondering on two main fronts. (1) Is the tragedy in Benghazy any thing more than an error of judgement . (2) Is it an attempt to score political points by the Repubs who are still smarting at their inability to sheet home responsibility for events during the Clinton administration? Perhaps it is even related to the fardical situation which made a luughing stock out of the Repubs as they went on a mndless crusade over the so called Obama birth certificate fiasco. That particular fiasco even generated a new word into the lexicon. Who now remembers the “Birthers”?
On a mre important question; Is the political scene world wide changing for the worse? We in Australia have a mess with the government fighting within itself for the top position, just as the previous Labor administration did. Eorope has a history of instability post WW2 and where ever we look, there appears to be a government not of and for the people, but of themselves for themselves. Cheers from Aussie.
From McClatchy: The report cites two anonymous government officials who said “the senior U.S. military official in the region” twice approached Stevens with the offer, and Stevens twice declined. The report does not say why Stevens would have declined the offer.
“As far as Mr. Hicks knows, the ambassador always wanted more security and they were both frustrated by not getting it,” she said.
“That is odd to me because Stevens requested from the State Department additional security four times, and there was an 18-person special forces security team headed by Lt. Col. Wood that Gen. Ham signed off on that the State Department said no to,” said Sen. Lindsay Graham, R-S.C., who has been among the most vocal critics of the Obama administration on Benghazi. “The records are very clear that people on the ground in Libya made numerous requests for additional security that were either denied or only partially granted.” Read more here: http://www.mcclatchydc.com/2013/05/14/191235/amb-stevens-twice-said-no-to-military.html#storylink=cpy
Documents Back Up Claims of Requests for Greater Security in Benghazi http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/politics/2012/10/documents-back-up-claims-of-requests-for-greater-security-in-benghazi/
On Wednesday, the State Department's former point man on security in Libya told the House Oversight Committee that he asked for additional security help for the Benghazi facility months before the attack, but was denied.
Various communications dating back a year asked for three to five diplomatic security agents, according to testimony at Wednesday's hearing. But Eric Nordstrom, the one-time regional security officer, said he verbally asked for 12 agents.
The request for 12 agents was rebuffed by the regional director of the State Department's Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs, Nordstrom testified.
New details on ambassador’s failed, fateful push for more security at Benghazi http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/worldviews/wp/2012/11/01/new-details-on-ambassadors-failed-fateful-push-for-more-security-at-benghazi/
To the left, a political witch hunt, anger, refusal to look at anything other than the party line. To the right, what's the real truth.
The reality of Benghazi is no one knows today. To many that have served this country, The government has been caught in so many lies that this may or may not be another lie. The truth will be known when there is a change in administrations and pressure can no longer be applied to the employees that were involved.
Of course the world situation is worse. We also have the same mess in the US as compromise is nothing but a word in the dictionary for the little people and not part of the vocabulary used on either side of our fragmented political spectrum.
It is #1 King a tragic error of judgment and nothing more. An error of judgment from the top right down to the man who lost his life, who when offered additional security, refused it. A political witch hunt by a bunch of extremists who obviously don't know or don't care that there is a great difference in an Embassy which was located in Tripoli and this consulate which was in Benghazi. Extremists who don't or won't understand that initial reports of this video could have in fact been a true cause to a riot that got out of hand. This is the reason attack leader, Amed Abu Khattala has given for initiating the attack. Extremists who know but won't accept that North Africa is one of the few places in the world that America cannot muster much force on a moments notice. Extremist who believe there is a huge cover up because they weren't invited to every shit the President took that day and now feel they are entitled to know his every move on 9/11/12
Basically king this is not about the difference between a consulate and an embassy, this is not about some trumped up video, this is not about military assets not being with an eight hour readiness radius.
What this is about is weather or not our crop of lawyers can run foreign policy, can properly utilize the greatest military assets in the history of man, can "answer that 3AM phone call."
Recently Yemen was added to our loss of influence that includes Libya, Iraq, and just about the entire Middle East. Max would posit that we shouldn't have been there in the first place and I do not totally dispute that. Now that oil and gas security is rapidly developing within our boarders it will be the likes of China and others importers that have to police the area for their own ends.
What this is about is weather or not we want to.elect another fad president. As our hip organizer feels the door hit him on the ass as he leaves do we want to anoint a progressive diva and her reprobate of a husband? Mr. Gowdy will let that facts lead us where they may. Ms. Clinton will be explaining "what difference does it make?" In front of a hearing with no artificial time limits.
The parents of those who lost their lives in Benghazi will get answers. Period.
Thank you all for the responses. I wonder why there are not more Australians contributing to this site? We are brothers in all but our flags and our interests lie so closely bound together that mutual understanding is, it seems to me, of paramount importance. As an aside, the snow forecast for a week or so back appears to have caught up with many of you in the past few days. William no doubt with his snow shovel and his Irish whisky and myself just in from the garden with the last of the peaches and plums, Tomato almost ripe and strawberries red on the bushes. Happy days and keep warm and safe all of you.
Expecting another 3-6 inches tonight after 4 inches Sunday morning. We have been spared the worst but our friends in Boston are on the verge of an all time record for snow in one winter. Many roofs collapsed due to ice and snow. Many terrible fires. These past two winters rival the ones I remember from childhood.
But all here are safe. The home that survived hurricanes Irene and Sandy is resistant to cold that hit 0 F last night. A bit more oil arriving Wednesday and the firebox roaring each evening. Looking forward to spring and golf soon I hope.
