Bernie Sanders Becomes The First Senator To Boycott Netanyahu’s Speech To Congress

bernie sanders boycott netanyahu speech

Sen. Bernie Sanders has joined the growing list of members of Congress who will be boycotting Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu’s speech before a joint session of Congress.
While speaking at the Brookings Institution, Sen. Sanders announced that he would not be attending the speech, “The President Of The United States heads up our foreign policy. The idea that the president wasn’t consulted? That’s wrong….I am not going.”
Sen. Sanders joined a growing list of members of Congress who not be attending the speech. The list of Democrats who will not be attending include Reps. Jim Clyburn, John Lewis, Raúl Grijalva, G.K. Butterfield, and Earl Blumenauer. Bernie Sanders is the first senator to announce that he is boycotting the speech in protest of the way that Boehner and Netanyahu have disrespected the president.
Israeli officials are starting to crack under the backlash. Their first move was to try to blame Speaker of the House John Boehner. After throwing Boehner under the bus didn’t work, Israeli officials are considering changing the format of Netanyahu’s speech to make sure that it does not air on primetime television.
Reuters reported, “As a result, Israeli officials are considering whether Netanyahu should speak to a closed-door session of Congress, rather than in a prime-time TV address, so as to drain some of the intensity from the event, a source said. Another option is for the prime minister to make his speech at the annual meeting of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee in Washington the same week, rather than in Congress.”
The outrage and boycott are causing Netanyahu to consider burying the speech. The Israeli Prime Minister still intends to give the speech, but public pressure may force him to abandon the publicity stunt of addressing a joint session of Congress on national television.
Ten House Democrats and Sen. Sanders have committed to skipping the speech. No one from the White House will be attending the speech, as the conspiracy to pressure and embarrass President Obama is turning into a humiliating defeat for Boehner and Netanyahu.

    2. That's the best you got? The only thing that surprises me about this is that for once, there is actually a little pushback for the open contempt that Boehnor and Bibi are showing Obama and the people who elected him. This was a facewashing stunt, that was meant to tell Obama he will be bypassed from here on out when it comes to Israel. What's kind of funny about that though is that this would actually require congress to do some work and debate legislation.

I made a post on this awhile back that was predictable ignored. I get why the right hates the uppity Kenyan Muslim. Functionally, however, Obama has done nothing negative towards Israel other than say he has limits on how much Likudlaid he will drink. I never bother arguing with people on the right about Israel because it is simply ridiculous. What bothers me about the children in Washington though is that the endless fuck you mentality embraced by the right is going to leave a very bad result in it's wake. The right has isolated Obama with it's actions to completely grind Obama into irrelevancy, and Obama has taken a lot of executive action, not all of which I agree with, in response. This opens the door to future presidents taking more and more power because congress wants to throw a temper tantrum rather than check the executive branch by actually doing their job. The good news, gotta, is that a lot of Americans are genuinely stupid enough to believe it's as simple as your post.

    4. Hey Rick,

It's busy and I shouldn't be screwing around, but I got an extra day off work yesterday and got caught up on some stuff. I've started clinical work now at an Internal Medicine practice. Starting in May, I will have an enormous amount of clinical hours to complete by the end of the year. But, the end is in sight, sorta. I finish up in December and will be able to sit for certification early next year. So far so good. Hope all is well for you and yours.

    5. Glad you are doing well. I and Mine are fine. Still recovering from the heart incident. I have logged 350 miles on foot walking and 250 miles on the bike since that time. I am riding about 20 miles an outing now. I have shed 35 lbs and feel great. Go back to the doc on apr 28 hoping to get these pills behind me. I hate them!
