Report: Feds probe Bob Menendez on Ecuador banker links
FBI agents are reportedly looking into Democratic Sen. Robert Menendez’s dealings with two fugitive Ecuadorean bankers, according to a New York City TV station.
WNBC in New York — citing anonymous sources — reported on Thursday evening that the New Jersey senator contacted the Department of Homeland Security and the State Department on behalf of William and Roberto Isaias Dassum. The brothers are fighting extradition to Ecuador over charges that they allegedly embezzled tens of millions of dollars from the country’s largest bank before it failed and had to be rescued by the Ecuadorean government.
WNBC said family members of the fugitives donated $10,000 to Menendez’s successful 2012 relection campaign, as well as $100,000 to the Democratic Party.
Menendez is already the subject of a federal criminal probe into his dealings with Dr. Salomon Melgen, a close friend and financial backer.
Menendez reportedly intervened with federal officials on behalf of Melgen, who was being investigated for reportedly overbilling Medicare by $9 million for eye treatments.
Melgen and his family have donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to Menendez and other Democrats during the past 15 years, federal campaign disclosure records show.
Melgen also gave $700,000 in 2012 to a Democratic super PAC that spent heavily in support of Menendez’s reelection campaign.
Let's talk about important stuff. Congresswoman Renee Elmers. Tea party activist in a gerrymandered district to protect her, because she is an idiot. She faces a very serious challenge first from within her own party, (that would be republican cause at the end of the day that's where teas are aligned) from a centrist challenger, Investment banker Frank Roche. And if she gets by that she faces a strong democratic challenger in the person of Mr. Clay Akin, yep the singer and successful recording artist from American idol several years ago. Akin put up a video for his campaign less then a week ago and has already had over 600,000 hits on his website. Ellmers who like most teas has been against damn near everything during her two terms is now scrambling holding forums on issues that Americans and North Carolinians really care about, most importantly immigration reform and veterans issues. This district lies smack on top of Fort Bragg. True to her worthless form Ellmers has been running her mouth in a derogatory fashion towards Akin her expected challenger in November, making comments about how he makes his living, his lack of success which is not true, and above all his sexual orientation. In case you don't know Akin is gay. This will be a high profile race and a bellwether for NC. Let's see if Akin can win this protected district and can his popularity and name recognition help Sen Kay Hagan reclaim this important district in her close reelection bid. Now WM there's some news that matters.
Let me get this right Rick... the republican party gerrymandered a district to protect a Tea Party candidate? I guess teas are making more political end roads than I thought.... If she wins against Republicans in a Republican engineered district, that is a statement in and of itself.
While I will agree that gerrymandering is a big problem both left and right, waving your arms over a 'protected' tea party candidate is humorous...
Rick, given that Sen. Menendez chairs the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs, I think it rather astonishing that he still holds this spot in light of charges of fraud and embezzlement with a foreign country...
Of course we have talked before about the lack of integrity of our elected officials and those who elect them.... As you say "Menendez is shady and has been for years. That's why you post is not news."
First it is news you all just don't talk about bad republicans I get that. Renee Ellmers will be lucky to see Clay Akin in the general election. The centrist republican that is running in the primary against her is a strong candidate. We won't even go into how Elmers got elected into the heavily Democratic NC 2 district that forced the realignment to protect her. It was a shady deal from a shady person and backers. Had she not been protected with the realignment she would have definitely been one and done.
“The violence and oppression in Ukraine is spiraling out of control as peaceful demonstrators in Kyiv’s Maidan Square are brutalized and killed by government forces,” Menendez said. “We in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee have monitored these developments closely, from holding a hearing last month to introducing a bipartisan resolution expressing deep concern for the undemocratic rule and abuse of individual rights in Ukraine.”
“So there are a range of options that are available, and it is fair to say that a range of options is being actively considered at the White House. But I don’t have any specific things, any specific decisions about those options to relay to you now,” Earnest added. “As soon as some decisions have been made, if they are made, we’ll let you know.”
These supporting statements must make the Ukrainian people feel so secure.
"Court records show Melgen has had financial problems. The Internal Revenue Service has lodged an $11.1 million tax lien against him, and records show Melgen lost a lawsuit in which he was seeking to recover millions of dollars he lost in a Ponzi scheme.
Liens for nonpayment of maintenance work had also been placed on another aircraft he once owned.
And there have been disclosures that Menendez interceded on behalf of port security company ICSSI, in which Melgen holds a sizable interest and that is seeking to enforce a long-stalled contract with the Dominican Republic."

ReplyDeleteBy the way we have all known in both parties that Menendez is shady and has been for years. That's why you post is not news.
