The race so far

The race so far:

Whether you’re a D or a R, it’s difficult not to find 43-year-old Marco Rubio appealing, he is the best communicator and probably the best-looking person in the race regardless of party.

Whether you’re a social conservative or a libertarian, it’s hard not to like Mike Huckabee’s folksy style. (The same can’t be said of the other social issues candidate, Rick Santorum, whose most interesting aspect is his sweater vest, and he might ditch that.)

Whether you think he’s part of the solution or part of the problem when it comes to the intense partisanship in the Capitol, you usually want to listen when Ted Cruz speaks, wondering what bomb he’ll throw next.

And Rand Paul is so unpredictable, at least for those trapped within the dominant left-right paradigm of the last generation, that you’ll pay attention just to hear him surprise you.

Carly Fiorina may not have tremendous political experience, but she’s aggressively going after Hillary in a way that other Republicans aren’t; perhaps they fear being called sexist. It’s not just good politics for Fiorina, it’s also darned entertaining.

OK, Scott Walker isn’t the most exciting guy but he’s affable and can play the folksy “I shop at Kohl’s”  and have it sound real, unlike Hillary’s ridiculous attempts to be plebian. And anybody whom unions hate as much as they hate Walker is automatically interesting.

Jeb Bush a total zero isn’t a particularly rousing character  (and has a willingness to challenge some strongly held GOP positions), which make him worth hearing to some RINO's.   No other Republican has his fund-raising ability.   Great to have wealthy friends in high places.

Dr. Ben Carson may have the dullest delivery in the Republican field and perhaps doesn’t have enough experience in the rough-and-tumble world of politics to be a viable candidate, but he’s an obviously intelligent, often wise, and frequently inspiring figure.

Yes, there will be some debate among Democrats, but other than with a few of Sen. Sanders’ wackiest ideas, it will go something like this:

Hillary: I want to raise the minimum wage.
A different Democrat: I want to raise it more.

Hillary: I believe in gay marriage.
A different Democrat: I believed in it before you did.

Hillary: The rich have too much money.
A different Democrat: Does that include you?

Hillary: I’m tougher than Obama when it comes to Iran.
A different Democrat: Who isn’t?

  1. Of the bunch you listed, I probably have the most respect for Rick Santorum. Likely, there isn't a damn thing I would agree with him on politically, but I see him as the most honest of the bunch. Again, I don't agree with his religious views, but if that collective above was marching past a dirty man in need, I think Santorum would be the only samaritan to stop and help, regardless of whether he had something to gain from it.

I had hoped Rand Paul might make things interesting. Now that he is giving speeches in front of Air Craft Carriers, it's hard to take him seriously. Not a one of them up there, including Hillary, are speaking to anything that is important to me. The Democrat that at the end there was certainly new and fresh. I've never seen that before.

  2. In this morning's paper George Will, conservative columnist, reveals the true Mike Huckabee. Among other things he blames the Sandy Hook school massacre on not having prayer in our schools. Then he vows to take back America for Jesus and proclaims that the government is waging war on Christians. Even Mr. Will admits that Huckabee is a nut case. Part of the blame may be that Huckabee was born in Hope, Arkansas, home of Bill Clinton. Here is the complete article:

    1. Just curious, why would you rant against Huckabee and not against Clinton?

      Some of Clinton's behavior:
“Clinton made almost $100,000 in the cattle futures market,” reported Tom Brokaw, and “many wondered whether that was a sweetheart deal arranged for the governor’s wife.”

That was around the time of the Whitewater scandal, in which friends of the Clintons got sweetheart land deals. Seven people went to jail, but not the Clintons. Their records disappeared.

Travelgate and Fostergate were also confusing, as is the Democrats’ sudden indifference to a president getting oral sex from an intern, deaths in Benghazi and, most recently, a violation of State Department email rules.

“I took the unprecedented step of asking that the State Department make all my work-related emails public.”
Except that wasn’t true either. She turned over only emails she claimed were relevant. The rest were wiped clean from her home server — a private server government officials aren’t supposed to use. Then she refused to give that server to a third party for an independent review.

The Clinton Foundation accepting billions from foreign governments and people doing business with our government. Anyway, the Foundation money went to charity. Hillary said, “I am very proud of the work the Foundation does.”
But what “work”? In 2013, a measly 9 percent of the money went to charity! Charity Navigator, the biggest charity rating service, won’t even list the Clinton Foundation in its rankings.

Hillary says, “I remember landing under sniper fire ... we just ran with our heads down to get into the vehicles.” That was total fabrication, but when Hillary was caught, she just told reporters it was a “minor blip.”

“Political language,” George Orwell wrote, “is designed to make lies sound truthful and murder respectable, and to give an appearance of solidity to pure wind.”
The left rails against Huckabee a right wing fringe candidate appealing to few yet gives Hilly a pass. Perhaps it's the left that needs a bit of a reality check.

Oh that's right, they didn't do anything wrong. Hilly's clean as Monica's blue dress. Asked why Bill did what he did, "Because I could." Seems Hilly has the same logic and the left gust closes their eyes and gives her a big PASS.

    2. Apples and Oranges Lou. If you want to make that case that Hillary is just a lying conniving scumbag, that's one thing. It doesn't, however, negate what Mick brought up about Huckabee, which is that even George Will has brought up that the Huckster is kinda baked.

In all honesty, why would it matter to you if the left came down on Hillary? I have complained about her before and I think there are plenty who are truly left who have real concerns with her. However, it is not because of any of that scandal crap. The scandal stuff that the right is hyper fixated on, has zero bearing on the lives of the people the Democrats allegedly should be supporting. So, the bottom line is that it would not matter if we complained, because it won't be over the same stuff.

What I want to hear about is what her plan and what her oppositions plan for their administration will be. Republican outrage of Clinton scandals and admittedly, left leaning criticism over fringe candidate religious lunacy will not let us hear about what the main candidates have to offer.

    3. LOL.

The left media and supporters never criticize their leaders, Bama, Hilly, Liz's claim of being of American Indian ancestry. All is forgotten yet a fringe right candidate is brought to the front. Perhaps it's a matter of importance. A fringe candidate that won't make it out of the gate vs. the front runners of the other side.

As long as the left focuses on the fringe right, The media ignores issues, what you call the scandal crap, you will never get to the bottom line.

Doesn't this country deserve an honest politician if there is such a thing today?

    4. Yeah, I know, coffee is running down your screen because I said something so incredulous. Not sure if you even read my last para, because you are responding with a point I'm not really arguing, at least in terms of what people are focusing on. That said, Mick's point was about an article from George Will, not Huffington.

Honestly, Lou, you are basically doing what you are complaining about. You want an honest candidate, but what you are complaining about is the scandalous past of a candidate from a party you will never vote for anyway. How is that really any different from a bunch of lefties using Huckabee's baked religious ideas as a straw man to attack all conservatives for believing in God? While you can surely, and likely will retort about how Clinton's scandals are about breaking the law while left rantings about Huckabee's "harmless" religious views, what matters to me is the functional result. Functionally, the end result is the same to me. As long as the left blathers about a fringe candidate they would never vote for while the right blathers about scandals of a candidate they would never vote for, neither will get what they say they want, which is an honest candidate.

Go back to my first post and tell me who in the bunch you think is more honest than Santorum.

    5. Guess as long as we give credence to the fringe and the dishonest candidates, we will continue to end up with the same.

You get to hear all about Santorum on May 27th. I like some of his positions, could care less about others. The same holds true for many candidates however most like Bush, Clinton, Huck, Rubio, Cruz are less than honest and some completely dishonest.

A sad state of affairs when we as a nation vote for what's best for the me factor instead of the country as a whole.

    6. In honesty Lou, you DO make a fair point. For the most part, I'm really not going to bother reading anything from the left about the Republican party during the primaries. I'm not going to vote in the Republican primary and I'm likely not going to vote for whoever comes to the top of that dog pile. Where I agree is that i think it's a little ridiculous for the MSNBC crowd to wail about some stupid donor controversy of a Republican candidate when they aren't going to vote for them anyway. I think all of us would be well served if we focused our efforts on keeping the party we will vote for honest. To that point, I would also agree that so far, Clinton has not gotten much scrutiny. True, the left is never going to immerse themselves in scandal gate when there are bigger fish to fry.

Hillary is trying to go so far left right now that she cuts off any attempt to be outflanked to that side. What I find funny about that is that a guy like Bernie Sanders can just walk onstage and not say a word and is already to the left of Hillary. But, like I said in a different post, the end game has kind of already been lost. If Democrats want real change, they need to take a chapter from the Republican book and conquer the local races.

    7. I guess I view both parties essentially the same. I look at all the candidates and find the one when I hold my nose I find least offensive. The negative politicking by the media is finally over the top. They pick their person, and then pick an opposing candidate they know cannot possibly win. McCain and Romney come to mind.

Want to see me vote for a non republican, let the GOP run Jebby. Want to see me vote 3rd party? Run Jebby against Hilly. Both beyond reprehensible, booth retreads from days past, both unacceptable. As a conservative independent, I am finally over it.

The left complain that the repub's under Bush are spending us into oblivion and they will fix it. Fast forward to Obama years and Dems have over the top spending. The GOP rail against the excessive spending of the Dems and say I will fix it. They are in charge and have not attempted to fix anything. Disfunctional government packed with liars in the majority at it's finest.

      I am thoroughly disgusted.

  3. Iouman, I wasn't ranting against anyone, I was quoting an article by George Will, a conservative journalist. I was surprised at his ranting against Huckabee. My attempt at humor, saying that the trouble with Huckabee might be because he was born in the same town as Clinton, was actually a dig at Clinton, so there. So, as I often tell my wife, Calm Down.
