It's summer and there isn't anything better going on which probably has as much as anything to do with starting peace talks. Seriously, I have become very cynical of these peace talks. Setting aside any opinions about Israel for a second, there is one fact that cannot be denied, the Palestinians are a group that no one really cares about. They receive support from radical Muslim groups, but they have no real power. Israel has the support of the US, other countries in the Middle East are just that, recognized countries. The Palestinians are simply a nuisance to everyone. And they are treated as such.
Regardless of whatever moral claims the Palestinians may have, the world simply doesn't give a shit. They can scream, they can bomb, they can can kill without discretion and they will not change public opinion one bit. Israel's retaliation to Palestinian aggression is always heavy handed and that part is seldom discussed. To support Israel means to never question a single thing they do in the name of self defense. We give Israel a lot of money despite the fact they have their own money, which means we are essentially giving them money to turn right around and buy military weapons from us. THAT is something I find morally objectionable.
Most discussions I see on the net about this tend to cycle one way or the other, and I cant' remember the last time I read something truly objective on the matter. Maybe it goes a week, or shorter or longer. Nothing will ever change though.
This is an honest question, how does this garner support from the Jewish voting block? I'm going to have to nose around a bit now to see if my gut feeling is actually correct, but I tend to doubt engaging in peace talks is high on the list of American Jews. Ensuring that we keep giving money and weapons to Israel is probably important, but I'm not sure on this one. For peace to happen, it is Israel who will have to concede something, not the Palestinians.
I have to wonder where or who the leverage came from...

I hate to be cynical but this is all about the Jewish vote. This initiative will go about as far as our progress with N Korea.
