A couple of note worthy quotes that may have meaning today:
"Government, is the only institution that can
take a valuable commodity like paper, and make it worthless by applying ink."
Austrian economist Ludwig von Mises
"By a
continuing process of inflation, governments can confiscate, secretly and
unobserved, an important part of the wealth of their citizens."
John Maynard Keynes
Anyone notice lately the smaller sizes for the same price. The price of the everyday essentials that the core inflation index ignores. Maybe the change is what some hoped for as we settle in for 3 long years.
louman,
ReplyDelete"Anyone notice lately the smaller sizes for the same price."

Hey Jean,
DeleteI always look back at Ice Cream. 1/2 gallon then 1.75 gallon, now 1.5 gallon all for the same price. Until they raise the price, is it really inflation?
When they reduce the number of tissues down 225 to 200, now 180, is that inflation of they don't raise the price?
I do chuckle at those who say, we are facing deflation. Maybe in product size but not in price.
I agree, the last ten years have been a joke for downsizing products, but keeping the price the same. I had a Klondike today and they are half the size they were fifteen years ago. USSNJ

DeleteSo, Obama is responsible for my granola bar that doesn't fill the wrapper anymore! Dog-gone-it, I should have known.
ReplyDeleteMick Do you not think that Bush may actually be at fault ?
DeleteMartin, thanks for the laugh, I left myself open for that comebacker! Actually, if some of these products get any smaller, they may disappear. Jersey
DeleteSeems neither is responsible. Look to the Fed as they control monitary policy. The policy could be a result of overspending and borrowing however both parties seem to have an equal claim to fame.
Delete"Government, is the only institution that can take a valuable commodity like paper, and make it worthless by applying ink."
ReplyDeleteI assume you are referring to money. Well, shoot, if you will send me all those worthless pieces of paper you have I will gladly send you an equal quantity of blank paper bills. Deal? Put your money where your mouth is buddy.
On January 1, 1965, miffed at having to work on the holiday, Sales ended his live broadcast by encouraging his young viewers to tiptoe into their still-sleeping parents' bedrooms and remove those "funny green pieces of paper with pictures of U.S. Presidents" from their pants and pocketbooks. "Put them in an envelope and mail them to me", Soupy instructed the children. "And I'll send you a postcard from Puerto Rico!" He was then hit with a pie.[11
DeleteDear ole Soupy helped to end his live broadcasting with his very famous "Baseball" joke,if you remember.
DeleteMick..... "I will gladly send you an equal quantity of blank paper bills. Deal? Put your money where your mouth is buddy."
DeleteYou messed up....You forgot to add "Ink"
Mick, great point on paper! Did you know that the Treasury actually produced $300,000,000 million worth of $100 dollar bills recently and they had to be burned because of a printing error! USSNJ
