Sweden riots expose ugly side of 'Nordic model'

STOCKHOLM (Reuters) - The scene of Sweden's worst riots in years, Husby is on the surface at least a typically neat suburb of colorful playgrounds, manicured parks and low rise apartment buildings.
Conversations with residents of this immigrant neighborhood soon bring tales of fruitless job hunts, police harassment, racial taunts and a feeling of living at the margins that are at odds with Sweden's reputation for openness and tolerance.
Riots that began in Husby have spread across Stockholm over the last four nights in scenes reminiscent of London in 2011 and Paris in 2005 - outbursts with their roots in segregation, neglect and poverty. The Swedish model of welfare - such as its 480 days of parental leave for each child - hides another side.
Some 15 percent of the population is foreign born, the highest in the Nordic region. The rise of the anti-immigrant Sweden Democrats party, which has called for a curfew in response to the violence, has polarized Swedes.
Metros and trains out of Stockholm center late at night are full of exhausted-looking Arabic or Spanish speaking immigrants returning home from menial jobs. Even second generation immigrants struggle to find white collar employment.
As one Asian diplomat puts it: "On the one hand Sweden has all these immigrants. On the other hand, where are they? It sometimes seems they are mostly selling hotdogs."
In a further illustration of two very different worlds, the first riot happened as many Swedes celebrated winning the world ice hockey championship. Most immigrants play football - it is a common refrain that ice hockey kits are too expensive.
"The worst vandalism is not what we've experienced in recent days," said community leader Arne Johansson at a protest rally in Husby. "It is the creeping, slow vandalism that this rightist government has exposed us to over the past seven years."
Seven years of center-right Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt - who has labeled the rioters hooligans - have lowered taxes and reduced state benefits. That has helped economic growth outpace most of Europe but Sweden also has the fastest growing inequality of any OECD nation.
Professor of criminology at Stockholm University Jerzy Sarnecki said society has become much more segregated, with a large, poor immigrant population living in areas of major cities where unemployment is dramatically higher than elsewhere.
Polls show a majority of Swedes still welcome immigration. Sweden has a reputation for treating new arrivals well - providing housing, Swedish lessons and allowing asylum seekers to live with relatives.
But the consensus is increasingly frayed.
"Those who, for whatever reason, don't have work have not taken part in the general rise in prosperity," said Ulf Bjereld, political science professor at Gothenburg University.
One recent government study showed up to a third of young people between 16-29 in some of the most deprived areas of Sweden's big cities neither study nor have a job.
Sweden received 43,900 asylum seekers in 2012, a nearly 50 percent jump from 2011 and the second highest on record. Nearly half were from Syria, Afghanistan and Somalia. Many native Swedes worry welfare could become unaffordable if the trend continues.
Asylum seekers, in the short term, add a fiscal burden on the welfare state. OECD data show foreign-born unemployed rates, at 16 percent, compared with 6 percent for native Swedes. Sweden needs high employment levels to pay for its extensive welfare.
ANGRY, YOUNG MEN
The riots appeared organized. Cars were set alight near pedestrian bridges and youths hurled stones when police and emergency services arrived at the scene.
Witnesses said heavy handed policing made the situation worse. Locals in Husby said they were taunted by police who shouted "ape".
"In the beginning it was just a bit of fun," said one young man in his early 20s who did not wish to be named. He was one of a Husby group of 30-40 youths that battled with police.
"But then when I saw the police charging through here with batons, pushing women and children out of the way and swinging their batons, I got so damned angry."
Police, who have called the rioters youth gangs and criminals, said accusations against the police were being investigated.
In interviews with youths in Husby, most were unemployed or interns. Many said they were bounced around intern schemes, seldom being offered full-time work, fostering resentment.
Local youths believe their Husby address is in part to blame for their lack of success. If they are lucky enough to be called to a job interview, many say they come from neighboring Kista - an IT hub symbolizing Sweden's more modern, global image.
Many complained a conviction for a small amount of cannabis might stay on a teenager's record for ten years, ruining job chances.
Stockholm has suffered riots and burning of cars before in recent years, although most fizzle out after one night. Other cities in the Nordic country have also experienced unrest.
Five years ago in Malmo, which has one of Sweden's biggest immigrant populations, local youths threw home-made bombs and attacked emergency services to protest a police eviction.
In Husby, the shooting of a suspected machete wielding man by police earlier in the month was the spark. Local people - around 80 pct of whom have immigrant backgrounds - organized a peaceful protest for which more than 100 people turned up.
But their call for an inquiry into the death of the 69-year-old fell on deaf ears. Plugged in young locals complained about racist insults on Twitter, feeding anger.
"Young people wound each other up and started a small fire," said Nefel, a beautician in her 20s. "I saw how the police came and treated them. I was in shock."
"I was there and saw it happen. I wasn't struck, but I did have a dog come at me. A police dog isn't a nice little puppy."
On the streets, resentment shows no signs of ebbing.
"My daughter comes home from school and says the kids say they can't play with her because she's dark," said Maria Petersson, a 39 year old Ethiopan-born nurse. "I am both Ethiopian and Swedish but I will never be considered Swedish by the Swedes. To them, I am just another immigrant."

Attack in London

For those who don't have their heads firmly buried in their ass and scandal outrage, this story broke yesterday,http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/05/22/woolwich-attack-beheaded-london_n_3320758.html?utm_hp_ref=mostpopular

In advance, I realize this is a complete waste of time because I'm going to ask for objective, thoughtful responses that many of you are not capable of. Typically, I get dismissed by the further right types here as somehow being a sympathizer of Islamic terrorists. I am not. I do not condone their violence against innocent people, I do not remotely condone their ruthless Sharia and subjugation of women (and pedophilia marriages) and I do not condone their undying hatred of Jews. Whether Islam is a religion of peace or not is not of interest to me. Organized religions of all stripes have murdered hundreds of millions throughout time. I acknowledge these religions exist, and I acknowledge that millions belong to them. The religion itself, however, is not the problem as I see it.

While I don't condone the violence committed by Islamic terrorists, I nonetheless find myself conceding from time to time that some of them may have a point. It doesn't justify their actions to me, but neither does it negate there is a massive problem growing that the west has largely created and continues to fan the flames of. Certainly, followers of Islam have been at war for a long time and even if the western world did not meddle so much in the affairs of the middle east, there would still be stupid wars. That said, the meddling isn't helping. In the disturbing video of one of the guys, he makes a comment that this sort of slaughter is what people in his country have to see everyday. I doubt they see exactly this type of thing, but with our drone strikes and other missile attacks as well as the civilian deaths during operations in Iraq and Afghanistan and Pakistan, there are a lot of innocent people who die in the name of us protecting our interests.

The real issue here, of course, is oil. To get that oil, we have supported endless tyranny and brutality. We give a lot of support to the Saudis, home of most of the hijackers on 9/11 as well as Osama whom we also supported while he was our proxy. I accept that at times, these bad alliances are necessary. However, I also believe a "shift" in how we conduct ourselves as a nation has occurred. Rather then stand as a shining city on the hill, I think we have become openly aggressive and lead with an attitude of, "Fuck you, our military is bigger." Much as we espouse free markets and individual freedom, we do not want to pay a fair market price for anything and if there are puppet thugs who are willing to subjugate their people and completely cut them out of sharing in the wealth of their land, we gladly deal with them. Despite celebrating our revolutionary past when we threw the British out of this country over perceived tyranny, we stand back aghast at the thought that we could be perceived as being just as ruthless and tyrannical as the British.

So, what do we do about it? That is a genuine question. So far, we have engaged in a pretty lengthy military campaign that has dismantled AQ, but done little to quell the anger and disparity that gives so many a feeling that they may as well become jihadists because there is little else to do. I don't support redistributing Israel to the people it was taken from. That ship has sailed. Nonetheless, I still maintain, as I have for some time, that waging a war against Islam is ridiculous and that the tide will not be turned until groups like the Islamist Brotherhood are put into a position of accountability. This is not appealing, even to me, but I see no other way. Thoughts?

FBI Locks Up an Afghanistan Marine Veteran, Because He’s Nuts.

Written by Gary North on May 22, 2013
The FBI arrested a man because he posted inflammatory material on Facebook. They say he is crazy. They put him in a mental institution.
On whose word? A psychologist, who spent 15 minutes with him.
That is all it takes in America for the FBI to get you.
His mother started posting on Facebook about this. The posts went viral.
My friend John Whitehead, a Constitutional lawyer, intervened. He runs the Rutherford Institute. The Institute is named after Samuel Rutherford, the Scottish theologian who wrote Lex Rex, and who was part of the Puritan revolt against King Charles I.
Whitehead says that every year in the state of Virginia, 20,000 people are forcibly incarcerated for mental illness.
This is surely very good business for people running mental facilities. It’s guaranteed business.
A judge has granted him his freedom. If his mother’s Facebook posts had not gone viral, and if Whitehead had not intervened, he would still be locked up.
What does this tell me? That Facebook can beat the government. The FBI went after him because of Facebook, and the case blew up on them after his mother posted her articles on Facebook.
I searched Google for “Brandon Raub.” I got 97,000 hits.
The government gets more lawless, but technology is ahead of the government.
See Whitehead’s interview of Raub here.

Hundreds of residents of Gush Etzion, south of Jerusalem, were astounded Monday morning to see an oversized Nazi flag flying next to a mosque in the Arab town of Beit Omar.
The residents notified the IDF.
A resident, Uri Arnon, told the Tazpit News Agency: "I felt we were going back 75 years, losing our hold on the land. The Arabs no longer feel the need to hide their murderous tendencies, announcing out loud that they wish to annihilate us."
An IDF spokesman said that the flag was hung on an electrical line, and that they were waiting to professionals to come and remove it.

Will IRS scandal scuttle Obamacare?

In Saturday's weekly GOP address, Maryland Republican Rep. Andy Harris vowed his party will keep up the fight, discussing a report by the House Energy and Commerce Committee that detailed how insurance premiums will increase for many people under Obamacare, not lower them as promised.

“According to new data from the nation’s insurers, under ObamaCare, premiums in the individual market will skyrocket by an average of double what we pay now, with some rates rising by more than 400 percent," said Harris. The report said people in about 45 states may see premiums jump by about 100 percent, according to statistics from 17 insurance companies.

In addition to the higher premiums, Harris Saturday claimed Obamacare will be mismanaged by the Internal Revenue Service, The Hill reports.

The IRS has confirmed that it gave conservative groups seeking tax-exempt status extra scrutiny, and Republicans are trying to determine if the Obama administration was involved in the scandal.

“Now, just think about the fact that it’s the IRS that will be responsible for enforcing many of these regulations,” Harris said. “If we’ve learned anything this week, it’s that the IRS needs less power, not more.”

In addition, it was learned this past week that Sarah Hall Ingram, who was named as the director of the Affordable Care Act's office in the IRS, had been in charge of the office in the IRS that works on applications from tax-exempt groups. Harris said that Ingram's involvement also casts a shadow over Obamacare.

Ingram was in charge of the tax-exempt division from 2009 to 2012, overlapping with the time when targeting first began. She began overseeing the health law implementation in December 2010, six months before her subordinate found out about the profiling.

Her successor in the tax-exempt division, Joseph Grant, said he plans to retire on June 3, just as Congressional hearings are getting under way, and earlier this week, the fallout over the IRS scandal lead to the ouster of acting IRS Commissioner Steven Miller.

But the Ingram connection is shaping up to be a key part of the Republicans' fight to repeal Obamacare.

"As a matter of fact, it turns out that the IRS official who oversaw the operation that’s under scrutiny for targeting conservatives is now in charge of the IRS’s Obamacare office,” said Harris. “You can’t make this stuff up.”

Obama IRS Refused Tax Exempt Status to Christian and Pro-Israel Groups But Granted Nonprofit Status to Muslim Orgs

The Inspector General released a report this week and found that 63% of scrutinized IRS applications were withdrawn or were still unresolved.
Conservative, Tea Party, pro-Israel and Christian groups were targeted by the IRS
The Obama IRS refused to grant tax exempt status to Christian and pro-life groups on behalf of the abortion group Planned Parenthood.
“In one case, the IRS withheld approval of an application for tax exempt status for Coalition for Life of Iowa. In a phone call to Coalition for Life of Iowa leaders on June 6, 2009, the IRS agent ‘Ms. Richards’ told the group to send a letter to the IRS with the entire board’s signatures stating that, under perjury of the law, they do not picket/protest or organize groups to picket or protest outside of Planned Parenthood,” the Thomas More Society announced today. “Once the IRS received this letter, their application would be approved.”
Planned Parenthood endorsed Obama in 2008 and 2012.
But, Muslim organizations were granted nonprofit status almost immediately.
Maryam Aryam Ansari at Illume reported:
Having spent most of my legal career working with tax exempt entities, the IRS scrutiny on the Tea Party isn’t news to me. In my days at large law firms, I handled a portfolio of nonprofit Tea Party organizations and saw firsthand how the IRS treated them when it came to granting exemptions.
In many cases, the organizations fight tooth-and-nail to get through IRS scrutiny, often facing pages of questions from the IRS on their activities.
In some instances, the IRS went about it in a more roundabout way, calling into question the organization’s use of funds, its outside grants and operational issues.
Several of the applications were even sent up to the IRS’ National Office for elevated scrutiny.
The experiences mirror the allegations of the American Center for Law and Justice, who represented 27 organizations.
On the flip side, I’ve worked with numerous Muslim organizations as well. And every single application of a Muslim nonprofit has flown through the IRS, with minimal scrutiny.
What does this say about the way that the IRS is handling applications from Muslim nonprofits? For one, in the application phase, Muslim nonprofits seem to have an upper hand over Tea Party groups.
Is this a tacit power-play by the Obama administration? Some would say so.

Sometimes the media does rise up and find a purpose in life, besides a shill for the leftist government...

Totally premature. If we had the media from the Watergate era, he would be toast at least Hillary's chances in 2016. However we have the fawning media today who will totally downplay any negative story regarding the Dems.

Color me cynical. "

The quote above was a response to this topic, what say you today my friends...?

Friday, may 10 2013 I put up the topic...

"Declaring that "I am not a crook," President Nixon vigorously defended his record in the Watergate case tonight.. "I am not a liar" declared President Obama as he boarded Air Force One for the last time... July 4th 2013."

What say you now my friends and fellow posters here, is the door open, just a bit more..?

What say you now...

Every day it will get worse, as Nixon found out, he is losing "credible  deniability" every second of every day.

Is this administration conducting a campaign using the government powers to go after "speech"?
Clearly the administration must know and probably do know they have been caught, but as Chicago style politics dictate one must have a "fall guy" for the blame.

I fail to see that firing department heads will somehow result in Obama being able to walk away from all the messes he has allowed to be created.

In any company in any country on this planet the depth and breadth of mismanagement and clandestine activities would result in immediate termination

Boston reservoir tests safe after late-night trespassers nabbed

Massachusetts State Police beefed up patrols around the reservoir that supplies Boston's drinking water after seven foreign students were caught trespassing in the area late at night.
With the city still jittery after the April 15 terror attack at the Boston Marathon, word that two women and five men, reportedly from Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Singapore, had been found in the restricted area around the Quabbin Reservoir caused concerns. The reservoir serves Boston and some 40 other communities in the area.
“As an extra precaution, water quality samples were analyzed at MWRA’s lab yesterday and all came back normal," Ria Convery, of the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority, told the Boston Herald. “There is no evidence of any water quality issues at the Quabbin Reservoir following the trespassing incident.”
It was after midnight on Tuesday morning when a state trooper on patrol at the reservoir spotted two cars parked on the grass near one of Quabbin’s entrances. The cop investigated and found a group of seven people, five men and two women walking from the water back to their cars. When the police officer asked why they were trespassing, members of the group replied that they were chemical engineers and recent college graduates who had an educational interest in the reservoir, according to police.
The group was briefly held at the scene while background and warrant check were conducted but let go after their records turned up clean.
“There was no evidence that the seven were committing any crime beyond the trespassing,”  Massachusetts State police spokesman David Procopio told FoxNews.com, adding that officers on the scene checked the vehicles and the park area and did not locate any items out of place or of a criminal nature.
Procopio also said that a preliminary investigation determined the individuals were originally from Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and Singapore. The Springfield field office of the FBI was contacted by the State Police and is assisting in an investigation.
“Further investigation is being undertaken because of the late hour when they were observed, their explanation for why they wanted to see the reservoir, and the fact that they were in an area marked no trespassing,” Procopio said.
Routine checks at numerous watersheds around the state have been stepped up as a precaution, but officials say nothing else has been reported as being out of the ordinary.
The seven individuals, whose identities were not released because of any formal arrest, will be summonsed to appear in a district court for trespassing. A court date is pending, according to officials.
