Before becoming a vegetarian (and even now) I pretty much refused to watch slaughterhouse video. I've seen some and what I've seen is horrific. What has always annoyed me about groups like PETA is their in your face screaming, they remind me of anti abortionists. At the heart of both is a belief that their cause is so just that the rest us need to be shocked into submitting to their view. Even as a vegetarian, I have a lot of gripes with groups like PETA. Nonetheless, we've reached a new low in allowing power to take away our rights.
Because of muckraking videos, the slaughter industry has gotten a lot of bad press. Frequently, animals are slaughtered while they are still alive and conscious and the speed of meatpacking lines has lead to unsanitary practices as well as injuries for workers. I'm not going to launch into a gory diatribe. Because of this, the owners of slaughterhouses AND factory farms have been able to buy legislation and get laws passed to make it illegal to be a whistle blower. Not only is it illegal to film inside the fences, it is also illegal to lie about whether you belong to an animal rights group before getting a job. In short, if you make public a violation of standards, you are breaking the law.
I find this baffling. It is against the law, apparently, to not follow standards of humane treatment of slaughter animals. To report that breach, however, is against the law. Many of you here, judging by your posts, have felt what you believe is a crushing oppression of liberalism taking away your freedoms. In response, the business world and the conservative world has now taken a completely different approach. If there is a law they don't agree with Federally, they write a local law that negates what they disagree with. If they laws negate what you don't like, I guess that's good. But at some point, do you really believe your freedom is being protected by this abuse of power?
Authority to make the law in the first place is at issue. The Feds are in to far more than they were meant to be.
ReplyDeleteBack your thought up a little. Some Nancy Boy metrosexual in NYC lobbies the Feds to make some law banning "X". You don't care because you're a Nancy Boy too.
Unfortunately, some guy in Wyoming who actually produces a product people want has to deal with this law. He realizes that his business and the law are not compatible so he lobbies for his out.
Now you come on and throw accusations about the Wyoming guy's illegitimate lobby of your legitimate law.
Its circular with the government eating on both sides. There is only one real solution and its bombarded to you here every day.
Nice imagery of Nancy Boy and Rugged Production man. Does Production man smoke Marlboro's too? So is the best solution to do nothing at all? Let them drive in downed cows with a forklift? Slaughter fully conscious animals? What I hear in your message Jimbo is that inevitable creep argument. If we let them make a law for safety today, they will keep making them and eventually we won't be able to leave our house because it's too dangerous.
DeleteNot that I'm for animal cruelty, but can you cite where in the Constitution do cows get rights?
DeleteI depicted the characters to emphasize diversity. I thought you would appreciate it.
DeleteAnd inevitable creep? That implies some process with some future result. No, I'm saying the government done crept.
Ok, I made a post on this, it published, and then it poofed.
ReplyDeleteim not really interested in a neo Market Watch forum.
I honestly don't know what to make of that. If there is some magic button to make posts disappear, I'm not aware of it.
